I'm a newbie Gin Drinker. My wife likes to drink Gin & Tonic on occasion and I tried it again and really enjoyed it. She switches back from Tangueray to Bombay brands. I buy them at Costco at a reasonable price. Are there any other brands out there that we should try that are as good or better in your experience?

My wife like New Amsterdam Gin. I personally tell the difference in any of them.

I always forget about Hendricks. $50 for a 750 is too pricey for me. I think it's probably the most drinkable gin and makes great martinis, but it doesn't have as much of an intense juniper taste. It doesn't stand up in a gin and tonic as well. But who would waste Hendricks in a G&T?
 
As long as one is using decent tonic and a good chunk of lime, I don't think the brand makes a lot of difference in a gin and tonic. That said, Tanqueray is my go-to brand for G&T's, though Gordon's is acceptable and much cheaper.

Regardless of the quality of the gin used in gin & tonics, they are a dangerously quaffable drink. I've heard they make your babies get born naked.:D

For martinis, Beefeaters is a ages-old classic. Then again, I haven't had a martini in several decades and my info may be dated. Martinis make me irretrievably stupid.

We have some proper martini glasses, they hold 10 oz.

My wife and I both like Hendricks but we also keep Bombay Sapphire and several other lesser gins around.

Thanks for the tips guys. I was surfing around on the net and the New Amsterdam gets some great ratings for it's price. I'll have to grab a bottle of that.

Cold River, from Maine, makes a very good gin, but it can be hard to find.
Bluecoat from Philadelphia is also quite nice.
 
Slightly off topic but for a change of pace try a Vodka tonic and lime made with Pinnacle Orange. Tried it a couple weeks ago and really like the mild aftertaste of orange.

As for Gin...it really doesn't matter after a couple of them...at least to me. :D Gordon's, Tanq, or Gilbey's. All do the same thing, more so if drunk as Rob (Merrylander) says above, as a martini.

I only drink an occasional martini when I get together with my college roommates who are confirmed martini drinkers. While the Bombay Blue (Sapphire) is available at substantial savings at my local Costco, I prefer the "regular" Bombay (red label) for my occasional Martini on the rocks. I find the red smoother (a bit less "stingy tasting"), perhaps due to the reduced alcohol content.

Haven't tried the Hendricks yet.
 
G&T is my favorite drink. I prefer a "pink" gin and tonic which has about 5 shots of bitters in it. I have yet to find a better gin than Hendricks and I've tried em all.

If Im not drinking Gin, I like Makers Mark on the rocks or in an old fashioned.
 
I don't drink it myself, but my wife swears by the blue Bombay Sapphire. If I have a decent rye in the house, she puts a bit in a spritzer and gives the glass a light coat.
 
If you are going through London Heathrow airport, they usually have KILLER prices on Bombay Sapphire in the Duty Free store. We picked up some Tanqueray 10 the last time through for a good price. Both make great martinis.

As for martinis...

"One is just right, two is too many, and three isn't nearly enough!"
