Old tube scope... Advice??

NRI professional, model 55.

Opened up, the tubes look pretty good -the caps measure off but not more than expected as this is extremely old.

What to do?

I'm in need of a scope pretty badly. I don't have a variac to get the caps reformed on.

Is it worth trying to recap and use?

Not really for serious measuring IMO. As a vintage display toy, yes. Or, robbing the tubes out of her.

Not really.

I haven't seen that model since I was a kid and now I'm an old man.

You can get a decent used scope for less than it would cost to fix that if it's broke.

IMO stand back, plug it in, and see what happens. That's what I always did before joining AK and learning about variacs and dim bulb testers. It made for some excitement! :naughty:

Not really very useful or worth investing time and money into. You can buy a used Hitachi scope on eBay for as little as $60.00. Try to find one that comes from a working environment or shop where it has been used recently.

Make sure you get the power cord and probes with it.

Looks just like the old Dumont scope on a shelf in my garage. Dumont-built for NRI? (National Radio Institute)
