Have you ever lived in a haunted house?

www.records

Quality over Quantity
Weird topic I know, but has anyone here ever lived in or currently living in a house where you have experienced strange unexplainable events? Wanna share some of those experiences?

I will go first. I am almost 59 and had never experienced anything, although my mom was convinced her house was haunted, nothing mean or dangerous, just spirits that would make themselves known from time to time. I never experienced anything over there while visiting but she said things happened during the night. My mom passed in 07.

We bought a house last July after our house was destroyed in the Joplin tornado. Our new house was built in 1999, so it is not an oldie. I have had several experiences in this house, saw a tall shadow person wearing a brimmed hat in the bedroom when I wokeup to use the restroom at 3am. It moved across the bedroom door opening and disappeared into a wall. I have also felt something bump the side of the bed several times when I had just laid down to go to sleep. I would turn on the light and I was the only one in the room.

I have been touched twice, both times in the bedroom. Once my shoulder was shoved and the other time just a hand laid on me for about 2 seconds. Bedroom door was closed and I was the only one in the room.

I also had just gone to bed, laying only side with my ear against the pillow and something spoke into my ear that was against the pillow. It was pretty loud, one word, but I couldn't make out what was said. It was very weird and I laid there hoping it spoke again so I could tell what was said.

Another time I was sitting in the living room on the loveseat and was home alone. Suddenly one on the throw pillows on the sofa flew out into the center of the room. Another time I was sitting on the loveseat in the LR and heard a loud knock in the kitchen, looked up and saw a black dot the size and shape of a softball in the middle of the door going into my music room. It shot off into the pantry to the left.

My wife has experienced nothing, so I guess it likes to mess with me. During none of these happenings have I freaked out at all. And nothing has happened during the last 4 months or so, it just stopped.

I am not a crazy person and this stuff really doesn't bother me. I just think it is odd. So has anyone else experienced weird stuff? Wanna share your stories? I would love to hear them as my experiences have peaked my interest in paranormal stuff.

I used to come home to the smell of home cooked meals and a few times when friends were over, the smell of coffee and donuts would appear and then vanish like throwing a switch. Note that I had not cooked anything recently when it happened.

I had friends who lived in an old Victorian era dairy farm. The kids from that family, three sisters, never married and lived there until they died. When Cowboy and Linda moved there, they immediately noticed activity. Linda would have things thrown at her in the kitchen, objects would be moved and oddly, you couldn't turn the light off in the stairwell. Linda thought it had an electrical short and wanted me to look at it. I checked both switches, one at each end of the stair and while quite old, they functioned perfectly. If you turned one off, the one at the opposite end would click on. I told Linda that it wasn't an electrical fault, but something else and to either live with the light being on 24/7 or to remove the bulb from the fixture. Cowboy told me that he was under the house working on the plumbing and heard loud footsteps on the floor above him in the kitchen. He thought Linda had come home and called out to her to bring him a tool.
With no response, he crawled out, went upstairs only to find the house empty of any living souls.

I dated, briefly, a psychic medium. She had second sight (I think that's what you call it...the ability to see things not in her presence), high-level empathic ability (mind reading) and she saw and could communicate with spirits. I didn't see any of the spirit conversations and generally didnt' know what to think of it all until the night before I ended it. We were sitting on the couch, side by side, and I thought to myself "this isn't working" ...just in thought...and she replied "What do you mean it isn't working?" as if I had been talking to her instead of thinking to myself.

The strange part was why it wasn't working for me. Something about her presence activated my fight-or-flight sense. We had met online and had become really close friends. But in her presence, my mind and body just screamed "get away and get away now". And she was just this calm, peaceful person. There was no reason to be freaked out by her. But I always felt like my personal space was being invaded even when she was across the room, and I felt like she was in my head.

I don't "believe" or not believe in these things, but knowing this woman pretty much convinced me that we don't know all there is to know. She never explained it all as ghost stories...she studied and read a lot about physics/string theory/dimensions to try to understand it herself.

She did talk about the spirits she had seen (though she explained that "seen" was really not the right word, as it was more a sensed-presence only sometimes accompanied by something visible to her). She didn't like their presence because they were usually (again, according to her) incredibly frustrated to the point of being incredibly angry at not understanding their plight.

Either way, she freaked me out. Apparently she had done some work for the government, as they use pyschics to help find things. Not because they understand it but because it's worked better than chance.

One thing I learned after watching a female spirit walk down a hallway and through an unopened door was that even though the current house was fairly new the spirit may have been more connected to the land than to a structure. I was working nights with a gentleman with Alzheimer's disease and the spirit was in his home. It was about 7 in the morning and I was brushing my teeth when I saw her pass the bathroom door. I looked out and watched her walk down the hall and through the door. They say it takes a lot of energy to make that clear of an image but I never saw her again. When I first started I always heard women talking and I would look around and out windows but never saw anyone even though I still heard voices.

Another strange thing that happened in the house was some nights while sleeping I had some problems. Years ago I had out of body experiences and what was happening felt similar but there was this grating noise that made me feel I should not let it happen. I would fight it and make myself awaken. One time I had to really force myself out of it and when I awoke I was shocked. A short figure I could best describe as a Leprechaun was there and I could tell he was shocked I could see him. He disappeared instantly and I was never bothered again.

Now for the strange tale. I was still living at home with my mother in a home built in the mid 1800s. I was in that state between wake and sleep. Something resembling a black butterfly that was vertical when it flew landed on my right arm. It was not of the physical world but visible. Oh **** I was scared and a voice in my left ear very calmly said to not worry I was safe. Then one evening about dusk I was heading out to my car when the same thing buzzed me and I jumped out of the way. If anyone had seen me they would have wondered what was going on since I doubt they would have seen it. One evening I was in the family room watching TV it flew in from the corner at ceiling height and flew to the basement. The home was two stories with all the bedrooms upstairs. What was really strange was what happened with the electrical service in the house. All of a sudden we had no power in the front part of the house.

The porch light, entry, living room, dining room and upstairs front bedroom had no power. The back half of both floors still had power. All circuit breakers were fine and no reason for the lack of power. Mom called an electrician and he came to check things out. He walked around and tested things and could find no problem. He was not even going to charge mom since he did not feel he did anything and did not restore the power. While she was thanking him the power came back on. I think he was very happy to be out of the house. I never told mom what I thought happened.

I tried to research some of the phenomena but had no luck.

Your story gave me the chills. I do believe in spirits, good and evil. It sounds as though a good spirit was trying to tell you something. I think you're better off IMHO.

hehe...nice :D

I think it was more of a natural reaction something atavistic in nature.
Two individuals with heightened senses reacting almost like magnets with like poles facing each other. The connection was troubling but not necessarily a sign of something bad. :smoke:

My Mom told me once, that the family lived in a house with "issues" when I was born, and that things got worse AFTER I was born, & they ended up moving. :scratch2: I can't say I've ever "seen" a ghost, but I've often had strong feelings about places, like some are warm & friendly, & some you just knew you DIDN'T want to go there. :para: It's the same with people, I pick up vibes, like some people, I just want to give them a big hug, & certain other people just make my skin crawl, like they're pure evil or something. :scratch2: I just trust those feelings, I figure it's a survival tool.

I never have, but I think my Mom did... She went to Duke University, & apparently was given tests by Dr J.B. Rhine, & she was found to have a HIGH level of "ESP". We never talked about it, though. I always got the feeling she was kinda hiding something....She LOVED ghost stories, had lots of books on them.

When I was a kid, there was a house across the street from one of my friends that gave me the willies. I said something about it one day while over there and his Dad replied "Oh yes, that is an unhappy house. Every person that's ever moved into it, left soon afterward." Decades later, it sold and they began rennovations to it. About halfway thru the project, it caught on fire and burned to the ground.
The fire was investigated, but was left as being "unexplained".

My uncle lived in a haunted house. I heard and saw many things there that I could only hope were easily explained by science.

My uncle is a detail person, if he wants something sitting on his coffee table in a certain place he always notices if it's been moved. He has a glass globe thing on a metal stand that would magically slide across the table when we weren't in the room. The most clear example was when there was drywall dust on the glass table, it had obviously been slid from one place to another.

I also saw a lot of what I think was a child that played on the stairs. In my peripheral vision I could see a shadow about railing height moving up and down the stairs. I could also hear footsteps upstairs and at one point my terrier was so freaked out he literally crapped on the step half way down the staircase. That was weird. He would also bark like he had something cornered and there wasn't anything there. His new wife is a person of heightened ESP type abilities and she has seen a young boy in the house.

I dealt with everything just fine until I was there during an afternoon with my uncle. We were talking and he began getting very agitated and upset about his divorce that was in progress. He was starting to get downright angry when all of the sudden the stereo shut itself off, a momentary burp in power long enough to stop the CD player.

All of the sudden my hair stood up on my neck and arms, I have never been so scared in my damn life. I said "what the hell is going on" and he replied "this stuff happens here!"

THEN all of the sudden his mini fridge next to his chair starts bouncing up and down off of the floor "bang, bang, bang". I didn't get a good look at it, I was so paralyzed with fear. There was an empty can ontop of the fridge sitting on a coaster. That can was rolling on the bottom edge in circles as if it was about to tip over but never left the coaster. The fridge was hitting the floor so hard that it was making the same sound they do when you drop them, I think its a checkball in the compressor.

My uncle leaned over and tried to hold the fridge against the floor and he couldn't. He yelled "knock it off!" and the fridge just stopped moving and was still trembling. He opened the door to the fridge and the movement stopped.

I have never been so frightened in my entire life. I will never forget it.

I wake up sometimes with someone standing over me, or sitting in a chair in my bedroom. Then they're just gone. To be honest, it kind of freaks me out a little. It's been happening since I was about 20 or so. My wife tells me it's my grandma coming to check on me more likely, I was 20 or 21 when she passed. It has happened in every place I've lived since about that time.

Thanks for sharing guys. I didn't figure I was the only one here who had experienced some strange things. I am looking forward to reading more.

By gosh I didn't think anyone had noticed my actions as I regularly "stepped" out quite often to Haunt this one or that!Whew I thought I had wasted my time but now that I read this I know I have been heard & seen!:)

There are more than a few unsettling stories in this thread already, so here is mine.

I didn't live there, but I worked there. It was a frame structure built in 1903. When I worked there in the late '90s, it was a building that housed five radio stations; three on the FM dial and two on the AM dial.

The attic was untouched since its series of renovations past 1903. In fact, it still had lathe on the walls with gas lanterns. Like any old building, I suspect it had its fair share of big events; both good and bad.

One night I was working the graveyard shift and I was the only person in the entire building. While sitting in one studio, I kept hearing the floor creak outside the door in the hallway. These were not the creaks you hear from a frame building "settling," but serious creaks from floorboards. As if somebody was pacing around. It persisted until I could take no more and decided to go to the first floor to get a drink.

As I descended the staircase, a shadow passed from the left to right above me. I could see it in the light which was cast down the staircase from a lamp mounted on the ceiling above the staircase. It was as if somebody had simply walked by.

By now, I had some serious chills going on. I made it to the first floor and was standing next to the water cooler when I said out loud, "I swear this place must be haunted." At once, a series of bubbles rose through the full water barrel on top of the cooler.

For the skeptics, I hadn't touched the water cooler; I got my drink from the vending machine on the other side of the room.

Never before had I felt something like that, and it hasn't happened since... and that was 14 years ago. My one and only experience so far.

I wouldn't call our house haunted... visited may be a better word. I've had a couple of different people, who are sensitive to such things, tell me that the house sits on a ley line and I figure that may explain things. No one thing happens but lots of different things. For example once I was working at the computer and heard who I perceived as my step-daughter walk up behind me, when I turned around to see what she wanted no one was there... Lots and lots of stuff like that...

I think seeing a Shadow Person would be more unsettling than a ghost... Altho I DON'T particularly really wanna be visited by either one..

Interesting stories in this thread. Here's mine.

I lived in an older house from the early 20th century while in college. Rome, GA as a matter of fact. Legend had it that the butler killed the maid and she was buried in the basement. I never went down there. These are a few of the events:

1) Sitting in another room across the hall, able to see the stereo in my room, the volume went from background level to maximum, nobody there.

2) Shower on in the middle of the night, when investigated, as the corner was turned, shower water stopped, nobody there.

3) One person, while lying in bed, saw the impression of someone's ass sitting on the edge of the bed, nobody there.

4) Another episode I experienced, while visiting at my parents home as an adult, resting in bed, heard footsteps go from one of the house to the other several times in the attic, nobody there.

This may not be a haunted house, but it was sure freaky! I lived in this house for a short period of time..less than a year. I was sitting at the kitchen table with some friends and all of a sudden it was like someone hit the floor with the biggest sledge anyone could swing..shook the whole house! Investigated, thought something broke or whatnot, but never did find the cause of it..and nothing like that ever happened again.
