Matt is directing quite a project. By Saturday, the boxes should be completed. Then it's off to the crossovers.:yes:

Saturday is going to a productive day. The 19's are ready for assembly. All of the holes were magically cut by Matt yesterday. His router was singing! Now it's down to drilling some holes, bolting them together, and watching them become Model 19's. I couldn't be happier with the project thus far!

BTW, how cost effective is building them vs buying used? :scratch2:
Well, put it this way:
Brad Muller (the OP and 19 builder) posted a comment on a thread about a pair of 19s on the 'Dollars and Sense' forum yesterday that were selling for $1100 Canadian, with the comment "You couldn't build them for that!".

When you're dealing with big cabinets and expensive Altec drivers, it ain't cheap. But, you get new cabinets and maybe, new drivers so you would have to compare the cost of the DIY build to a pair of new 19's, not used.Nice!
Woodworking is beyond me so it's great to see someone with skills to match the specs.

Smaller speakers are the best bang-for-the-buck in the DIY audio world, IMO. It's also pretty hard to surpass the 19 in most folks listening space.

Here is the pricing that I put together for the project. I've gathered a ton of data on the project that I will post here shortly. Overall cost for the speaker cabinets and xovers is a litte over $500. The vener is not included in the cost
Altec 19 plans Per set
foam inserts - darst 60
MDF 3/4 3 sheets at $ 38 each 114
xovers, speaker connections, wire 270
Misc - screws, nuts and bolts, wood, 35
casters 25
Wood for covers 10
xover boards 8
Sub total 522
There is some misc. prices (router bits, jig saw blades, paint, etc.) that is not included.
Much time was spent on deciding the best way to cut the sheets in order to be the most efficient on the MDF and on the vener. Bought 8 pieces of MDF and now have two left over for my next project (Stonehenge for my 604's). Creating router jigs for the various holes also took a little bit of time - but the project is coming together nicely. Only one little slip so far - that you wont be able to see.
