Sansui AUX1 repair shop?

78c3sam

New Member
I have a Sansui AUX1 Augus 1980 build that is in need of repair, one channel had three or four of the Sanken outputs go and the driver board for those transistors also has issues. Sent it to a shop in Long Island "in House Stereo" and they could not resolve what he said was a heating and bias issue with the driver board.
I still want to get this unit repaired and have search the net, found a fellow in MN that says he can do it, but I would like to know of any others, I also found this shop http://www.randallareed.com but the email address and phone number on the site are not valid. Anyone know how to get a hold of this fellow? or does anyone know a shop that can bring a dead AUX1 back to life? I want someone who will do it right.

thanks.

If I were in your shoes,I would have sent amp to one of our experienced technicians (LBPete,EchoWars,manymoonsaudio,scottrt,avionic...etc,..sorry guys if I forgot someone) regardless the cost, waiting time and shipping problems

Sasui AU-X1

:thmbsp: On Pepa's recommendation.

Randall Reed has occasionally offered items on Ebay and has his website but, as best I know, is not involved with AK and I can't vouch for him, while the above are well known to the AK community. If I am not mistaken, dr*audio has had a lot of experience with the AU-X1 and would be an invaluable resource and I think that he is still accepting work. As as aside, it would be great to have a list of members who are active in repairs or restorations.

I have no technical knowledge but I think that the main problem will be getting replacement output transistors. The originals are unobtainium. Suitable replacements were briefly available but these have gone out of production:

I apologize if my information is incorrect and eagerly await input from the pros.

Of course, I would be happy to take the problem amplifier off your hands, as would many others here.:D

If you are in the NY metro area, contact AK member JBLMar. He's in Brooklyn.

I agree. Echowars is one of the best.:thmbsp:

I know I picked the wrong shop now, I actually contacted a couple of the members here 8 months ago, a couple mentioned above and they told me it would be a year or more before they could look at it, 8 months later I should have waited. I have pretty much lost interest in this amp and am thinking of letting it go. This is a August 1980 unit according to the serial #, the cosmetic condition is excellent, all switches knobs, terminals are perfect, the preamp according to the shop is fine, it is just the one output channel with its driver board being the issue. It has to be worth something, parts are pretty much impossible to find for one of these and this has lots and still has the promis of repair in the proper hands. I have pics and if I can figure how to post, I will.

Try not to lose heart over this, you have according to many one of the finest amplifiers of its era, if not THE finest. Vintage Hi-Fi is a minority hobby - so you should know (now you do anyway...) that people who can repair these pieces properly are in a minority too. Also stocks of the right parts to repair these beauties are drying up fast, so there is no time to lose.

Sign up with one of the US techs already mentioned - get that amp out of the hands of that shop. Accept that through no fault of your own a mistake has been made. And begin the wait for what will be a treat that many here would give their eye teeth for.

Sansui AU-X1 Repair

Don't be discouraged. If it can be fixed, it is a terrific amp and quite the collectors item if the cosmetics are good. If I was right in my post, the main issue will be getting replacement output transistors. I would recommend contacting Echowars or dr*audio for advice about this, since I know that they have worked on these. If they think that they can come up with replacement transistors and get it going again then it should be worth the wait, even if it is another year. I hope that someone with more technical knowledge jumps in here and verifies that the now obsolete 2ST5949 (NPN) and 2ST2121 (PNP) transistors would be suitable replacements and that these are the only "unobtainable" parts and how many are needed to replace all of the output transistors. If so, then you can get in line for repairs and spend some time on the internet to see if you can come up with these. If you fail, there will always be someone else to take your place in line. As long as you are honest with the technician about your circumstances, I don't think that anyone would mind.

If the cosmetics are good enough, and the only unobtainable parts are the output transistors, then I and I'm sure others would be interested in buying it as is, and waiting a year or two to see if replacement transistors can be obtained. If this issue can be cleared up and you really want to sell it then PM me, or list it in Barter Town, Agon, or eBay with the facts about what is needed for repair as you know them.

thanks to all who replied, i sent off a couple requests for service over the past week and have heard nothing, haven't the time or energy to see it through. I will list it on eBay or one of the other sites with the details as I know them in the coming weeks.
Thankss, Sam

Sansui AU-X1 Repair

Hi Sam

I'm sorry you're giving up. Like I said, I am certainly interested and will bid on it if I come across it if I could get the questions on replacement transistors and other "unobtainable" parts answered.

Kale or anyone else in the know, would the 2ST5949 (NPN) and 2ST2121 (PNP) transistors be suitable replacements and are they the only "unobtainable parts"?

Good luck.

Marc

I have those output transistors in the ST brand on stand-by. I got some when EW announced that ST was making them. I have 8 npn & 8 pnp. They were cheep at the time. My 919 & Kenwood mono amps use them. I think the X1 uses them too. I may need them some day. My dream is to have the X1 some day.

Sansui AU-X1 Repair

I've been in contact with 78c3sam. The OP listed it on eBay but will withdraw it if someone agrees to take it on for repair. He has been trying to get a response from technicians, thus far without any success, though he has managed to track down replacement ST transistors. He would appreciate it if someone would agree to take it on for repair. Otherwise, he will sell and move on. If you can fix it for him, please send him a PM.

I canceled the auction on eBay. I was getting emails from buyers around the world that wanted to bid and wanted to know how much shipping would be to them. I checked for one person in Argentina and the cheapest shipping VIA UPS was $1088, yes $1088!. I then went back into my eBay listing and tryed to remove North & South America and could not change it. I revised the listing on eBay and stated I would only ship to United States and Canada. Well buyers were not reading or just ignoring the ship to and I had bids from countries other than the U.S. and Canada. Rather than have the whole thing blow up in my face and have a buyer not pay because of an argument over $$$ shipping fees to somewhere else in the world, I just canceled the auction. Maybe some day I will get it out and do something with it, but not now.
