Sansui 9090 vs 9090db differences

The 9090 has 110 w/ch and the 9090db has 125 w/ch I think. The 9090 was made a few years before the db. Is there really much difference in the power supply's? What are the differences besides the db feature built in on the 9090db and the 15 w/ch?

The power supply and amp sections are completely different. The driver boards are different and the output transistor arrangement is different. The 9090 uses 8 NPN transistors. It's my understanding this is an older design. The 9090DB uses 4 PNP/NPN pairs.

The power supply on the DB model uses a pair of 12,000 uf caps, the 9090 uses a pair of 6,800 uf caps. The 9090DB power supply is more robust, it draws around 450 watts, the 9090 draws around 275.

Overall the DB is very much updated over the 9090. That being said, the 9090 is still a very good receiver in it's own right.

Thanks Pete, that was what I was looking for. It would seem with such major improvements in the db, Sansui would have given it a new number instead of just adding a little db. From the outside they look very similar except for the db knobs.

I have two 9090,s not db one draws 270 watts, the other draws 750.

Someones been mixing again........... :D
The 9090db's I have are rated at 435 watts and the 9090 at 270 watts. Looks like the 9090 makes better use of it's input rating though vs out. Must be the dolby board! :sigh:
 
I've also seen a number of posts from 9090 db owners whose Dolby boards have gone bad. Once they go, its either strip parts from another 9090 db, or kiss the receiver goodbye.
