Back about 6 months or so ago I went over to a friends' house and noticed that he still had a turntable and all of his records from back in the day. Of course the conversation turned to music and audio, and I just happened to mention that I was into vintage audio equipment. He said that he still had the Marantz 2250B receiver that he purchased new back in 1976 when he was in college, and that it had been in storage for the past 15 years or so. I told him that if he ever wanted to get rid of it, I would be very interested in picking it up from him.
Well, last evening we had my friend and his wife over, and what do you think he had in his hands as he approached the door? You're right. His Marantz 2250B, and in its' original box no less. I asked him what I owed him, as it was always my intention to pay him for it, but he said, "Nothing. It's yours." He just gave it to me.
I got around to opening it up to take a closer look at it today, and it is in very good condition. He still had most if not all of the original paperwork that came with the receiver, as well as a Marantz Receiver brochure with this unit listed in it.
The unit fired right up, and most of the lights still work. One I did notice that is out is the dial indicator light. It is also missing all of its' feet. My friend said that he originally had the wood case for it, but that it was thrown away years ago because it had been damaged. Too bad. It would have been nice to see if I could restore it.
I hooked it up to a couple of test speakers and a CD player I keep around for the initial testing of a unit of unknown condition, and I could not hear even a hint of static in any of the tone controls or volume. I don't think this unit will even need a DeOxit treatment. That was a big surprise considering this unit has been in a non-temperature controlled storage unit for the past 15 years. This one is definitely going to be a keeper in my collection.
I need to order a replacement bulb kit and some new feet, and once they arrive I'll dig into it and get the basic clean-up and and bulb replacement taken care of. I told my friend that I would invite him over for a listen once I get it all cleaned up and working properly. It is definitely nice to have good friends.
BTW, if anyone has a suggestion for a vendor for the bulb kit and feet for this unit, I would really appreciate it.
