But, no... this particular project is something a little different. It's become painfully clear to me that I don't know the first thing about wiring a full wave bridge with silicon diodes!

My fuse popping machine is a simple pair of bare wires that I touch together. It also provides a brief and intense light show.
I made a hot dog cooker when I was a kid by hammering two framing nails through a board and wiring an extension cord to the nails. You'd spear the hot dogs onto the nails and plug it in, and presto, heated hot dogs. Mom and dad were disturbed by this one.

Sure you do. You know that if you wire them up a certain way, you will blow fuses.

Huh. Turns out you have to insulate a TO-220 type diode from your chassis with a special insulating kit, or you're just dumping electrons into the ground.

i think you can get ones with insulated cases ... also they are available in dual diodes so you only need 2 ..

My Fisher 400 is a pretty good fuse popping machine too; might give yours a run for its money there Nate.
You do have to admire the ingenuity of some of the builders around here, that's probably one of the nicest fuse poppers out there!
I always wondered what the design process was on semiconductor devices that had to be bolted to a metal surface to dissipate heat, but would blow up (or blow stuff up) if allowed to actually touch that same metal.

them thin wires bother me on them caps ..i hope its low current .. but why the big caps for low current ?

Low voltage, low current. And big bad film caps, cuz they're badass... Those are 400uf at 400V.
