I have now finally finished my RCM, it has been a labour of love!
The carcass is made from a cut down book display case I scored from work for nothing, and I resused the cam lock fixings as this is about half the width and a quarter of the height of the original display case!
The vacuum motor came from a 1800W Hoover that I got for nothing from the local freecycle. I chucked away everything except the internal motor case and a bit of hose for connecting. To get a pipe connection from the odd shape on the motor case, I made up a small box with a 42mm pipe stub coming out from MDF, this was hot glued to the motor case.
I also cut a slot in the side of the case to let out hot air from the vacuum, and covered it with one of those little vent covers.
Pipework is all 42mm solvent weld waste pipe, with all off the shelf fittings. I had all of this in stock, so again a zero cost.
The platter came off my old Marantz 6170 after it died, so it still lives on. The hold down puck was turned up from 18mm MDF, and has a piece of rubber cut from an old platter mat to protect the record labels. A thumbscrew was modified by drilling and tapping for a M4 bolt to allow it to screw down to the spindle.
The spindle came from the 6170, my mate drilled it and tapped it for the 4mm bolt at the top, and he also made me a custom boss for the motor from nylon, which was screwed to the motor output drive and the spindle was mounted inside this.
The motor is an old Toyota electric window motor, the cable drive was mounted to the boss for the platter drive. Again, I had this as a spare from the wife's old car so zero cost there again!
As the drive motor is 12 V, at which speed it runs a bit fast, I used an old AT power supply that came out of a server from work a long time ago, this can provide 30A at 5V and 20A at 12V. The motor is driven on 5V to reduce the speed.
I fitted a mains power switch to energise the power supply, and I have a center off toggle which reverses the motor's drive direction.
Finally, there is a further toggle to turn on the vacuum.
Connections up to the top for the suction wand are all again in 42mm solvent weld waste pipe, the piece that comes through the wooden top is hot glued in place. Finally, a 42mm - 22 mm reducer is used for the suction wand, which is made from an offcut of 22mm PEX Barrier pipe with a slot cut with a dremel. A nylon plug was turned up for the end of the wand.
Overall cost to me was about £5 for the odd little bits I didn't have already, and it does a very good job!
