My attempt at a SX-680 recap list

Greetings, many thanks to all of the folks here who dedicate their time to help newbies like me get into the vintage receiver repair. I've got a working 680 that I'd like to recap but since this is my first attempt to do this I would love some feedback. Am I doing this correctly?

Many thanks in advance to all who participate here.

WELCOME to AK!!

How about going to the Introductions forum and telling us a bit about yourself!! :D

interesting work, nice touch including a quantities column...
The 680 is all one board, otherwise I see where you could add the board number where a model has more than one board, but overall very nice work for the 680

overall, and this is NOT a criticism, just an observation, I look at the quantities available and prices of the various voltages before deciding upon which cap, with a substantial number of them ending up at a higher voltage because it isn't any more expensive, or larger quantities are stocked. And one also has to keep an eye out on the size of the caps and whether there are any tight squeezes on the board. Then I review the design, and what they used keeping in mind that the modern caps are less tolerant of voltage overload (15 percent and pretty loose on the old ones, 10 percent and VERY tight on the new ones - DON'T go 11 percent, it'll bite you) and the power supply caps (even power filters somewhere else in the unit than on the power supply board) get a margin of safety.

without further ado, here's a parts list for the importer over at mouser:

edit - UH OH, some of these are NOT STOCKED PARTS......
(i check that too, before publishing, usually - ya got me there, today
now I gotta review the entire list... sigh....)

second edit uh oh:
Parts List removed due to finding of multiple serious capacitance value errors in original list, sorry...

you MUST visually verify the list before posting, either at least in the schematic, if not in possession of the actual model.

Thanks for the feedback

I did as you suggested and posted a bit of my background in the introduction forum. Thanks so much for taking the time to do what you do for guys like me who are trying to dip our toes into restoring this awesome old gear.

As you'll see in my intro, I'm an IT guy so being overly anal about detail just comes with the territory. I had poured over some of your old posts about how to read and order the right capacitors and held off ordering anything until I got some legitmate feedback from an expert like yourself. As you've noted, I've made a few errors on my list, but that's why I'm here.

Thanks for the feedback and guidance. I'll go back to the schematic and the actual model before I move forward.

hang on a bit before doing anything I'm almost finished with the corrections....

Once you get the list made up, I'd still double check it against the actual board. There may be undocumented changes to parts. So the best thing is to check against the actual unit and modify the list ot fit you particular unit. Then KEEP THE LIST with the units paper work for future reference.

You've got the #1 PIONEER guy working on your case. Provided you do everything correctly with regard to cap polarity and transistor orientation, it's a cinch it'll work 100%.

Larry

I am blown away by your dedication to this markthefixer. Thanks for taking time out of your personal life to put this list together and teach me a few things.

And larryderouin, thanks for chiming in with the reminder to check against the unit.

Both of you are awesome for helping me out with this. It's much appreciated on this end.

Well, I can use the list in the future too, so it's a bit of time shifting PLUS if we get our formats straight, then your contributions will save ME time sometimes...

edit: a suggestion to make it easier for those of us that inhale the text into a spreadsheet,
when there are a variable number of elements in a line, use a comma as a placeholder
so this:
CEANL 2R2P 50 2.2 50 6 C203, C204,C211,C212,C511,C512 647-UKL1H2R2MDDANA
CEANL R47M 50 0.47 50 2 C301,C302 598-DSF050J474
looks like this:
CEANL 2R2P 50 2.2 50 6 C203, C204,C211,C212,C511,C512 647-UKL1H2R2MDDANA
CEANL R47M 50 0.47 50 2 C301,C302, , , , , 598-DSF050J474

which then makes it a bit easier to import into a spreadsheet. :D

Now, for when you are actually going component to component, FINDING them in the list:
(You'll thank me when one of a group of 6 changes...
otherwise you have to add a line, this way you go to the specific cap)

very few of those if any are nichicon kz, fg, or kt audio caps, or elna silmic ii audio caps, or nichicon ka high temp audio caps for the power supply. try those strabo

Bran when you are nasty to me it's bad enough, but now you are back to putting me down and undermining me. Coming LOOKING for trouble.

Well, I opened up the 680 to verify the list and it took me quite a bit of time to clean the unit. I estimate that it had at least 1/4 inch of fuzz on the main board. The most dirty piece of electronics I've ever seen.

When I cleaned the unit, I found that it appears to have been serviced at some point in the past 10 years. The caps all look to be of a recent vintage? I've attached a pic of the main power caps. Perhaps this explains why the system seem to play at a very bright level when I first fired it up.

The mains may have been changed. Pioneer used Nichicon, Sanyo, and Nippon Chemicon's. The Mains usually had an ALL Black cover with the specs printed on them. No stripe, etc. The 42V is unusual, so that may be an era specific replacement.

Stay with the list Mark made up. you can't go wrong. The listed parts have shown thenselves to meet/exceed specifications in their specific place according to what PIONEER specified. Mark's 30+ years working in the industry is good enough for 99.9% of AK'ers. If it wasn't he wouldn't have a 2-3 year backlog.

Larry

Thanks Larry, that's exactly what I intend to do. Thanks much for the feedback.

Hey everyone, C138 and C141 should be a 1uf/50v not 0.1 uf/50v. That is what is in my 680 and on my schematic also. I just happened to be recapping mine and I already had one replaced before I caught it. I think a 647-UKL1H010kddana or a 598-DSF050J105 should work.

C150, C151 listed as 4.7/50v should be 0.47 50v. I used a 647-UPW1HR47MDD. I suppose you could use a stacked film cap but I was out of them and I have the UPw's on hand.

Correct on BOTH counts. I see how I goofed on number one, but not number two...

OK, BOTH of my posts have been fixed, as well as the spreadsheet I keep.

ANYBODY who quoted those posts should backtrack and fix them.

No problem Mark. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. Just trying to keep others (and myself) on track.

Thanks for sharing the information bmac, I've updated the list I'm compiling.
