What: The Fisher Metropolitan Model M-4592
Where: Local Habitat Restore
Cost: $25

Details: The Fisher 21-R chassis; Dual Model 1014 TT; original paperwork & manuals!! Beautiful Mediterranean style in pecan. Not sure what the production date is but I think it's from the '70's.

Checked out receiver and TT. The Fisher 21-R was in relatively good shape, but the Dual will need some work. Cleaned, wiped, dusted everything down and removed the TT. Cleaned/lub the receiver pots and connections. Now it is really sounding good! Checked out the speakers - they are sounding good - look to be the original Fisher units (complete with reverb cans!) Including some photos.

If anyone knows anything about the Dual 1014, please share that knowledge. Looks to have a Grado cartridge that I will replace, but my main concern is getting it working.

The can's over the mids are NOT "reverb can's". They are isolation units so that the mid speaker doesn't pick up the bass interference.

The 1014 is similar to the 1009 thru 1019 series. Use those SM. vinylengine.com has them but be forewarned the SM's are in GERMAN. It's similar enough. clean the idler with Hot Soapy (DAWN ONLY) water, rinse in hot water and DO NOT TOUCH RIM EDGE afterward. after drying overnight a drop of sewing machine oil on the idler spindle is sufficient. If it still dragsafter that , or is hard feeling on the edge (feels like a crust on the rim) you'll need a new idler.

Interesting side-note, the non-polar capacitors on the speaker crossovers are the exact same type as I just found in my Scott S-11 speakers, circa 1968. They are black with red "epoxy" ends. Anyone know who made those and how well they hold up, that is, should they be replaced just due to age like most electrolytics?

They are wax impregnated film caps. They leak electrically, and have probably drifted in value by now. Cheap enough to just go ahead and replace them. Probably the biggest difference will be in the high's, and if it has one for the bass, the bass will tighten up.

Parts Express has Non polar electrolytics fairly cheap in the speaker cap section.
 
Update on My Metropolitan Console Fix

OK - got the idler wheel rebuilt for the Dual 1104 TT, installed it and .....

got it back spinning vinyl!! Playing Herb Alpert LP right now! Sounds great!!

Still haven't got the Dual to work in AUTO mode, but she's trying to do it. There is something out of sync in the mechanism. If anyone has any idea what I could do next, please let me know.

Also, does anyone know what the Phono "HI/LO" switch does on the 21-R chasiss?

The Hi-Lo switch is probably for selecting what kind of cartridge you are using - Hi for ceramic and Lo for magnetic.
 
WOW! Great price, too! There's a '67 Executive on ebay with an asking price of $1550 so you got a STEAL!

Did you have the idler rebuilt or were you able to buy a replacement?
 
I've had Terry rebuild some tape recorder wheels but never a phono idler. I've had great luck getting new phono wheels from Gary at Voice of Music: thevoiceofmusic.com. He usually has wheels in stock and you send him your core.
 
Don't ya just love how TJB sounds on one of these?

Hi/Lo is for Cartridge type. Hi for Ceramic and Low for Magnetic. How much did Terry charge you for rebuilding the idler. I've got a couple that need it and VOM doesn't have replacements for.
