I restored a pair of AR-2ax last year and this was the cloth I used, from 123 Stitch
18 Ct. Lambswool Linen 27x36
Very high quality and IMO looked better than original - here it is on my pair before the badges were re-applied:

Yes, it does look like AR used the same stuff for both, best I can tell. I prefer the look of the 123 Stitch stuff over the original linen AR used. The 123 Stitch stuff is not quite as transparent, which I think is a good thing because it hides that ugly, square upper-hole (Old AR's usually look much-better WITH grillcloth than without... The thicker the better IMO). Look at the photo that craig25 posted.

Years ago I went to the fabric store and found some similar colored fabric. Unfortunately it totally "muffled" the sound on my AR 4X as it was not the proper fabric. They now looked nice, but I had to take the grills off in order to listen to them. Would like to do this right...this time. I have to recap, change the rock wool, and find a new L-pad as well. To bad this will not be a one stop shop for the restore.

One way to keep the holes in the grill backing from showing is to paint the backing black (and let it dry, of course) before applying the cloth. Works a treat.

In the six years or so since I first became acquainted with vintage AR speakers, I've had my eye out for replacement cloth that approximated the range of linens used on the grills.
I've never tried the 123 Stitch fabric, but I ordered several that I'd seen online brought up on forums or marketed as replacements. I haunted fabric and craft stores, looking at a galaxy of linens, burlaps, and cross-stitch fabrics.
I'm not as into vintage AR these days, but I like the aesthetic and planned to use similar linen on my next homebuilt pair of speakers.
And then, I hit the jackpot:
Curtains.
Looking through the curtains at JC Penny one day, I noticed that they had a couple that were dead ringers for vintage grill cloth - all of it made in China, all of it polyester.
It looks closer to the old linen than anything else I've tried, and at $25 per curtain, it's far and away the least expensive option I've examined.
Check it out!
