I have a problem.

Only reason I wanted these despite having A400's was because I heard them at local AK'ers place last year and they sounded amazing but I didn't have many good speakers that time.
In any case, surrounds are not rotted nor ripped but have started to show some signs in some area.

Bad:
  1. One terminal cap and 2 jumpers are missing in one speaker but that's not a big issue.
  2. One tweeter doesn't work. This may be expensive.
  3. Foam surrounds in some areas have opened up if stretched and looked closely instead of smooth top layer so may need re-foam in a year or so.
  4. No spikes.

Good:
  1. Cabinets are in excellent condition besides minor scratches and dings.
  2. Grills are very good.
  3. All drivers seem to work except one tweeter.
  4. Came with a Paradigm center that can recoup some of the costs.

Need to sneak them in without wifey knowing. :rolleyes:

Hey, glad to see you got a pair of these! Congrats! (I was the local whose T1030's he heard) :banana:

I blew one of my tweeters not long ago and fortunately it was just a small length of wire that was burned out and it was easily repaired by soldering in a graft of wire. Maybe in your case it's just as simple. I think the wires on the speakers act like fuses... mine did.

They sounded great at your place.
Have you decided which one you prefer now between these and NHT 2.5i?
 
May be more issue with these.
When carrying them inside, I heard click/clunk sound on one so may be other drivers are messed up as well. :headscrat

Yes, that's the case.
Opened the one with bad tweeter.
As you mentioned, the lead is broken or fried.

I fixed Allision AL 120's tweeter before and thought that was a thin wire but compared to this Boston, that was as thick as a rope.
I used a thin wire with plastic sheath on the Allison but this tweeter has a hair thick tweeter wire so nothing with plastic covering will work. :yikes:
What did you use? I'm thinking of a copper strand from speaker wire or just drop a dab of solder so it touches both ends. :headscrat

P.S. I mentioned something was dangling inside making noise, it was nothing but just the cables that were banging on the sides when the cabinet was shaken. :)

The bottom lead is broken right below the yellow colored terminal. I think it got little heated at some time to have that color or just from the solder:

Edit: Also, the gold plated/colored jumper plates are missing on one speaker as well as one terminal cap.
Where do I get those? The jumpers are thick flat plates.
I'm using a DIY steel wire for now.

When you get these up and running, please give a thorough listening and compare with your A400's. I would like to know as much about the differences between these speakers sound quality and character and in particular, how the bass performance of each compares to one another. I have A400's and find they sound great. I would love to try the T1030 and T930.
 
Man, that tweeter lead looks as tiny as the ones I broke on my 035Tis. I finally just gave up trying to fix them, but I'll be curious if you succeed. Any cheap replacement tweeters on eBay?

Will do but general consensus from threads is that A400's are superior (not sure how much better though) to T1030's but I think T1030's may have better/pleasant bass than A400's from what I heard when testing them briefly.

It's so thin that even a light bulb's filament looks thick.
I don't want to jinx it but I'm pretty confident I can fix it from my experience with Allison before.
The tweeter doesn't have any model number in the back so I'm not sure if other models' (A60, A100 etc...) tweeter will work on this T1030.
 
Tweeter repair is a success :-)

I used three strands of wire from inside of 18 gauge speaker wire.
It's still thicker than original. :eek:
Even the hair thin wire has some protective insulation that needed to be stripped/melted.
It measures 6.5 ohms in dmm after repair.
I think it should normally read just under 6 ohms around 5.8 ohms or so but it's not much difference and it sounds fantastic. :music:
All the shrills and sizzles in highs are there.
Also, bass is great. Sounds very good.
It's too late to make them any louder so will have to wait for some other time.

I think A70 and A100 along with T930, T1000 use same tweeter and it's fairly cheap around $35 so not a big deal.
You should give the 035ti a try.
This is my 2nd tweeter fix and so far so good. :thmbsp:

I've used brass shim stock to make those for a pair 2ax's I had, seems like there is always a piece in an old set of feeler gauges. Then I just used a hole punch from the dollar store to make the holes.

I found parts express sells jumpers but they are straight ones. They don't curve on the cups' two height levels like originals do: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=091-650

I'll just find a terminal cap and use some heavy gauge speaker wire as jumpers.
The missing cap is making it hard for bare wire to use as jumper there.
 
Nice score! I am a bit worried at all the speakers in your sig though. You wife may have you build a small outhouse or doghouse from them and put you there permanently!

Not sure. I believe they unscrew to allow spades and wire.
