Thanks for the congrats, guys. Yesterday was so hectic, fast paced and surreal it seems like I'm just waking up from a dream. I was on CL early yesterday morning looking for a dbx driverack PA and for no explainable reason other than it's something I do from time to time (but very inconsistently) I typed "Infinity IRS" into the search box and lo and behold that ad popped up. Before I even looked at the other pictures in the ad I shot an email off and then had to leave to take the kids to school. The seller responded via text within about twenty minutes and I asked if the speakers were still available and if he'd sell them and the servo unit separately, to which he replied "yes". I was able to call him after the kids were dropped off and it was only then, through his descriptions of the drivers, that I was able to determine they were Betas.
A ten minute conversation revealed his prior (deceased) wife bought everything in the ad new and he hadn't listened to the speakers in five or six years. Seems the new wife of three years finally decided it was time to clear it all out so, up on the block it went. His knowledge of audio was somewhat limited as he kept referring to the woofer towers as "mid" towers and didn't know what to call the deteriorated surrounds. He knew they were something special but never once made reference to their original sale price or value, so I think he did zero research in this regard. I asked him what kind of money we were talking about and he said "make an offer". I told him I needed to see them first so we set up an appointment for that evening as that was the earliest he could show them.
Down at the shop things were crazy busy and productive so the day FLEW by and I had very little time or surplus attention to think about the speakers. Before I knew it I was in the seller's living room looking at a pair of Infinity IRS Betas in the flesh. The seller was a smoker and they were dusty as hell but otherwise in very good condition. All grills and badges were intact and unscathed, finish on the wood had only a few small blemishes, and there were no signs of molestation or abuse.....these were easily a conservative 8.5. I took a Hafler 500 and 110 pre and used my iphone as a source and tested out the mid/high panels. All drivers were working fine
banana and there was only a small bit of evidence the level pots were corroded/dirty. I took a measurement at the binding posts of the woofer towers to see if there was any big difference between the two and they tested 1.5 ohms within one another. It all looked good so I asked him what kind of money he wanted them. He gave me a figure, I countered with something a little less and he agreed. I asked him how much he wanted for the Thorens and his number on that was much, much more informed. So, no bargain to be had there so I passed. So I got the speakers, servo control unit (no way to test so fingers crossed on that one) and one servo interconnect cable and left the rest for who/whatever. By not buying the whole lot I saved almost $1200...which I'll need to put toward another Threshold amp.
I'm literally concerned about how good my fortune was yesterday.
