Here's a little project I've been working on for the Home Theater system.
I purchased these off the local Craigslist for $40.00. The cabinets were pretty beat up as all the original walnut veneer was peeling off and scratched up pretty bad. These speakers originally came with 1 tweeter, 1 midrange, 1 10" woofer and a 12" passive radiator. When I got them the 12" passive radiators were shot do to foam rot, and the 10's were mix-matched radio shack drivers. I replaced the 10's and replaced the radiators with new working 12" woofers. As far as the cabinets go well, I took off all the old walnut veneer and gave them a fresh Red Oak veneer all the way around. Thought I'd share a few pics with my friends here at AK !!! Man these speakers sound fantastic !!! :yes:

I wired the woofers in series off the original cross over. The frequency range (40-5000hz ) is identical on both drivers, so I did not need to change any frequency values there... :thmbsp:

Here are the specs on the new drivers:
10” Woofer - 100 watts rms, 200 watts peak, 97db, 8ohm, 40-5000hz, paper cone, accordion surround, 30 oz. magnet, 1.5" Kapton voice coil.

12” Woofer - 250 watts rms, 500 watts peak, 99db, 8ohm, 40-5000hz, paper cone, accordion surround, 50 oz. magnet, 2.5" Kapton voice coil.

I purchaced the drivers from a local shop just a couple hours from here. I can't say anything bad about thier woofer drivers... I've bought eight of them so far... :yes:

All the 12's that I have from them are the 8 ohm 12" warriors.
Nice solid tight bass and with the accordion surrounds, they never need to be re-foamed !!! :thmbsp:
 
I thought putting different sized / type woofers in the same cab sharing the same space caused all sorts of issues? I would think they would be fighting each other and forcing each other to do some passive radiation (for lack of better descriptions) and cancellation at different frequencies. I know this has been done somewhat successfully in other speakers but the overall opinion is it is not the right thing to do. :scratch2:

That aside those are great looking, nice job. :thmbsp: Very nice living room. :thmbsp:

I'm probably missing something, but would a series connection put your impedance to the crossover up to 16ohms, whereas the original setup had 8ohms? Won't this make a difference?
 
(Scott) Yes these are the same drivers I used for the Aztecs.

I had posted this thread earlier hoping to address some of same questions that I had when I brought these home. I guess I should re-phrase that the woofers have been wired in parallel not series. With that I would have to assume that the Ohm values dropped in half from 8 ohm to 4 ohm... :dunno: Are the woofers working against each other, I don’t know? To me it sounds like they are working together, the bass is justly refined and clean. I would think that if they were canceling each other out it would produce a muddy, incompetent bass note? Yes, I did change the properties of the cabinet by substituting an active driver for the passive radiator. I considered the whole project as a test to see if the cubic volume of the cabinet could handle the extra active driver. These cabinets measure 36” Tall X 16” Wide X 12” Deep bigger than other speakers I’ve seen with multiple woofers, so I thought it would be worth a shot. I still have the radiators that need to be re-foamed so I can put them back to the original design… but I can tell ya now….. I’m not any big hurry to try them as they are singing really nice as is... :yes:
 
I see... I'm not 100% sure how speaker impedances go, but in general, I would tend to think that you would have a 4ohm impedance in parallel as well. No worries, if the setup sounds that good and you're not seeing smoke then I wouldn't touch a thing - enjoy them, I know I would love to have a box with a 10 AND 12" woofer in it lol. They look great btw, I like the styling with the black grill down the center.
 
Wiring the two 8 ohm-ers in parallel will, indeed, result in a 4 ohm load. This will lower (raise? I forget) the x/o point (assuming there is a low-pass filter on the woofer) by one octave. Ideally, this would be corrected by changing the filter components accordingly. However, if you're happy with what you are hearing (and you apparently are), why mess with it? - Mark
 
RtR made so many designs that look completely different. Too bad I never got to see that site with lots of thier models mentioned in an old thread.

This issue of dissimilar-sized woofers parallel-wired in the same closed cab--just like my Speakerlab 7's. But the magnet sizes, VC dia, moving mass, and other specs on the 7's are closer to each other, and the cab size is bigger.

Another speaker I have has identical woofers in the same cab but crossed over differently: 2-1/2 way setup. Don't hear any deliterious effects there with cancellation or passive-radiator type behaviour. But they have large twin ports in the back and 50-oz magnets. (Klipsch RF-7).
