I found a very nice pair of UTAH 10in 3ways cheap. They are one owner and in like new condition. I dont know the model number but the owner tells me they are the "Heavy" ones. . .

I know the boxes are real walnut veneer and the grills are not removable, at least they look non removable as they are recessed a bit.

I know about old Bozaks but not Utah. My question is what do I look for to be sure I am getting a decent speaker other than how it sounds. Are there certain model numbers I should know??

Seems like I have heard good things about Utah speakers. . .I will also search the forum.

The guy wants 80 bucks for the pair??? Since I finally sold my Bozaks, cabs were just too rough, I need a pair this size.

Utah generally made good stuff, not high end but not crap. They also produced a lot of drivers that other manufacturers used OEM. I have a tons of Utah drivers around and they are all nice sounding and well constructed. I would say $80 is a little much though, at least in my area.
 
He had them listed on CL Columbus for over a month. . .He has called me everyday since I emailed him with my phone number. . .Something tells me he would take less. . .Maybe not but he is anxious to sell them. . . I will talk to him more this afternoon.

I have a set of Utah WD-66's and they are surprisingly good, espesially with tubes. VERY efficient. With 1/2 the vol knob, I got 2x the sound of more compared to my Wharfedale Saphire SP89's Not sure I remember if the were 10 or 12" woofs. The 66s have a removable back after removing a zillion screws...

Sonically they were VERY close to the Wharfs, which surprised the heck out of me.

They don't have quite the WAF of the wharfes, but they are far from ugly.
 
I picked up a pair of Utahs at a garage sale for cheap a few years ago. 12" drivers and nice real walnut. But they sounded horrible. The woofers really were cheaply made as was the mid and tweeter. I chopped and pitched them. Somebody bought the woofer for too much moey on ebay. The rest is still wasting space somewhere in my basement. Not recommended.

Thats a shame, recapping might have brought them right back depending on the model.
 
My experience with Utah's....

was not good, in general. Many were sold through electronics supply houses since Utah also sold raw speakers for PA and background music systems. This was the case in North Carolina where I lived.

Most Utah's were pretty simple and low-cost speakers, built into good-looking cabinets for their top-end stuff, vinyl veneer in the lower end stuff.

I would avoid all but their top-end speakers. About the only way to tell, though, is to remove the back and get a look at the drivers, which will tell the story. As others have noted, it will most likely be a zillion screws on a back cover.

From the looks of the pics, though, I'd suggest that the grilles have been recovered - I never saw ones with that sort of cloth. Most I ever saw/worked on had a rather bland brown-colored cloth.

Thanks guys for the input, exactly what I was looking for. The only Utah speakers I ever heard were Terry Dewitt's when I picked up my old SX-1010 that I bought from him. He had an old KR-9600 hooked to a pair of Utahs what model I do not know. That was briefly but IIRC it sounded great.

He had a 9600 hooked up to 4 speakers and he switched between the 2 pair both sounded great.

I have all but wrote these off but I might ask the seller if I can look inside. . . I have a super screw gun. . . He has all the original paperwork, boxes etc so they might be a find.

Only negative is the fact that he is trying to hard to sell them. . .for whatever it's worth. He is not a young man buying them new. . . He says 20 years ago but I suspect longer. I dont know mid 80s Utahs but these look late 60s or early 70s to me. . . :loser:
 
I've had good luck with my Utah 12-inch co-axials I bought out of a Zenith console. But didn't get them to really work to my satisfaction without an equalizer.

I'd offer around $50 (max) for the pair your looking at. Utah is sometimes referred to as "the poor man's Electro-Voice."
 
I have 3 pairs of Utah WD-90s as of now. Gotta realize time has taken its toll on them. If they are acoustic suspension (and they almost certainly are unless they are some of the horn tweeter models), the rear cabinet seals are almost certainly shot, 4 as of now that I have had that the seal was shot. Makes them sound boomy and bass heavy. Crossover caps almost certainly need replacing as well. Do those two things and you'd be surprised they actually sound rather decent. At least the cloth surrounds seem ageless, still looked as good as new on the ones I redid.
 
I have a pair of Heritage HSC-1 Utahs... I always thought they had a real good
bottom end, over-pronounced mids, and not much in the high range...

I haven't checked them over to verify that the tweets are working, nor have I tried
to recap them to see if they would come back...

But I only paid $40 for the pair and that was with $30 shipping.

Right now they intrigue me enough to play around with them instead of dumping them.

For what it's worth... $80 is a bit high tho...

i have some 10 inch 3 way utas modle AS-5 i think they are form the late 60's probly middle of the line ones... for what its worth i think they sound very good and they are my main speakers so i listen to them a lot
very blanced if maybe a little heavy on the mids
warm sounding
maybe myn are broken but myn do not seem to be very efficent
really have to crank the the volume to about 40% more then any other speaker i own to get the same effect (thats with only 35 watts tho)
the soundstageing sucks but i think that is more to do with the room and the placement... but thats what happens when you ahve to cram everything you own into a 8 by 10 room... aahhh the joys of being a student...but i degress
80 might be a little cheep but if thouse ones (with the really wood vaneer they probly are even better then mine) sound anything like mine you would be hard pressed to find a better sounding speaker for that price...

p.s. there are like a zillon screews on the back :yes:
