Mirage M760 Score

Hi All,

In the last couple months I happened across not one, but two pair of a fairly rare speaker and at a great price! ,

the Mirage M-760 a TOTL for the M-60 series.. my apologies for not having a camera handy so i am borrowing a couple for now. I have been a great fan of ADS tower speakers ( i have 2 pair of L1290s and L990's and M-12's) and have had more than my share of speakers from Klipsch (la Scala's, Forte's and some of the modern stuff)

I can say these Mirage shocked me the tweeter is a Vifa and it is very very nice, the bass is wonderfully deep and very crisp .. and the fit and finish is something akin to a bunker not amazingly pretty or fancy but .. they weigh almost 70 lbs each, lots of internal bracing, not quite vintage and not new… I highly recommend anyone who see’s these should snap them up.. the big issue is they only have a tiny sticker on the connection plate that tells you they are the M-760 which usually falls off (fell off both of my pairs and I had to dig and dig in the mirage pictures online until I found a brochure that helped me out (and another forum here)

Has anyone else had these and been impressed with them as well? These were from just before they built the famous bipolar design but they were designed, engineered and built in Canada.

Hate I passed on a pair of the 260 & 360 speakers without the M!
Mighty fine sounding speakers.

the 260s were also Mirage i have a pair of them too thats how i recognized the look of these when I first stumbled across them .. hmmm 4 M760s and a pair of m260s .. sounds like a good start on a surround sound system .. although I usually do 2 channel .. i am currently A/Bing them with some Paradigm 7se's about the exact same age similar components .. in fact i think they actually share the same VIFA tweeter i am pertty sure .. the Mirage are KILLING the 7se's then again .. this is not a fair comparison that would need to happen against maybe the Paradigm 11 se's not the 7s .. i dont think the 9's would be fair either .. These 760s are really head an shoulders above the 7ses but they seem a cut below the ADS L1290s i started comparing them against
 
Boy, you can sure spot the API in those cabs. I used to audition Mirage stuff at the local Tweeter outlet. They need to be out into the room quite a bit if I remember correctly, but damn-nice-sounding speakers when powered/used right.

API is the same Canadian company that made my dB Plus 1010's, and I know they made Energy stuff and a bunch of other brands. Good stuff.
 
So if i am reading this right those are not Vifa?

ps I was also lucky enough to pick up a pair of Paradigm 7SE's today for 30 bucks .. (call me butter, I'm on a roll)
 
yes about that hooking them up to the right match, i first hooked them up to my HT system with a large late model Yamaha surround sound .. moved to 2 channel, they sounded impressive but when i moved them to my dedicated 2 channel and hooked them up to dedicated (bridged mono) NAD 214's they made goose bumps ..
 
Those are keepers. I picked up a pair of M460's a year or so back and they are quite satisfactory. There is just a little paper sticker on the back that says 460 and made in Canada. The grille does have a mirage badge.
Don't talk them up too much tho or we will see a spike in their prices, and I am still looking for what you found.So don't tell anyone else about them.:rolleyes:

I am pretty jacked i came across one pair at a thrift shop and another pair on craigs list .. the CL pair just popped up Mirage tower speakers 65 bucks .. i was lucky i was testing something on a computer and wanted to test an all text page so i thought oh .. CL ... all text .. popped it open and right at the top was Mirage Tower speakers 65 bucks .. i sent an immediate note saying i would take them .. i could see a picture and didnt care even of they worked i could tell the cab's were very nice and worst case i would make a speaker out of them and i wouldnt have to build the cabs and they are really heavy .. built like a tank .. every bit of 65 lbs each i doubt there are enough of these floating around to get enough attention to spike the prices, heck no one knows what they are cause that little paper sticker just falls off thats why the guy selling on CL didnt even know what they were he bought them new and only could say Mirage towers ... :)
 
Hows this for an idea .. i stack them .. it would be a massive Mirage M760 MTM type of set up all of 7 ft tall :-P I can run dual mono blocks at 4 ohm running the 4 speakers in parallel .... crazy? or just crazy enough to be great? ... i mean people stack far inferior speakers to these i wonder what all the hullabaloo is about

now those would be an interesting match up with the 7se's they look very similar but the 7se's are going back out the door here ..
 
Luvin.. are you really just across the lake from me? i am right off lake st clair hey neighbor!!!! .... .I thought these were Vifa .. the Paradigm 7se's i picked up today look to be Vifa as well but i have not pulled them i am too interested in the mirages .. ... lol the Paradigm's i pcked up probably feel like the girl I was talking to at the party before Angelina Jolie walked in and started talking to me .... sitting in a corner looking at the much more appealing Mirages
 
I have indeed been impressed with the 760, I used to sell them. Very good speaker but we did not sell many as it is really quite imposing. The 460 was a really nice one from that series as well.

What would you say were contemporary competitors to the 760?

Imposing? I dont find them imposing .. but then i have recently got rid of Klipsch LaScala's have a pair of Cornwalls, 3 sets of ADS towers, and a pair of AR9LS ... so he he he.. maybe I don't notice them .. other than the weight when I have to move them!

What I do believe will find them imposing are some of the speakers that will now go out the door when i start moving these into rooms to displace other things

I would say that it seems that you have a bit more time in and experience with Hi-Fi than I do. If you have the time and the inclination I'd say give your stacking idea a shot, and turn it up!
I just started putting stuff back together a little over a year ago... I do have the M460's "stacked" ( I suppose that term is close enough as they are really just in close proximity to each other) with some Infinity Sterling SS2005's that I picked up and for 9.95 and modified to control the boomy bass and refoamed with the help of some of the folks here on AK. No mono-blocks or anything of that nature. Sometimes I run just the mirages and sometimes both together. They are powered by a Pioneer Sx780 or an Sx838 and I have a Pioneer PL41 TT with a Pickering XV-15. I am just now in the process of trying out some various CD players. It is interesting to listen to how the components sound in different combinations.
Initially I was just going to spend some minimal dollars to get a basic 2 channel rig together and play some of my old vinyl but things have certainly gone past that already..and I suppose will continue to do so as I now have various stereo equipment available to be played in three different rooms and had to convert a closet into a space for record storage.
I still can not believe that for 10 years or so I listened to music on this imac or on a little 8WPC mini component bookshelf thing..... I will no doubt over time locate / procure some equipment from the modern era and put it into play also.
Anyway once again congrats on your Mirages... I'll keep my eye out and ears open for some paradigms also and whatever else I can audition.

I can't really compare to modern speakers as I have not been doing a lot of listening to new ones.

The 760 were huge compared to the small bookshelf Mission/PSB/Kef/etc most people wanted (and you had to convince many people to buy something as big as those instead of the dreaded Bose Acoustimass they had heard elsewhere!)
 
Sweet scroe! I paid $85 for my 460's last year. It took me a long time to get to like them, but I finally came around when I hooked them up to some nice clean power. These just start to wake up with my Onkyo 150x2 amp. They really shined on the Nikko Alpha 225x2. They may be rated @8 ohms but dip down to 4, so they really like a lot of current. uploadfromtaptalk1375271301296.jpg

Raynald .. I get it .. so you were working in the industry right when the sky opened up and took the big HT dump on the era of quality high end 2 channel .. its nice of late i have noticed that a lot of companies seem to be emphasizing the need for a quality "front" speaker in the HT set ups ... I had got away from audio right about that time as the surround sound came to be so i didnt see the downfall until i went back to get new stuff after years .. and its a bit sad

philridebike great looking set up :) they are a nice mid tower .. 85 .. i feel like i stole my 760s .. both are in nice condition and sound great what didn't you like at first .. i liked the Mirage M760 immediately these fall into the category that i dont want to sell them off even if i don't have room, i would rather find someone who understands them and will give them love if that day comes lol I think i am going to build a harness that will allow me to connect them in parallel with equal wire lengths and stack them one pair on the other with the uppers upside down
