Thought I would share an excellent sounding yet affordable used system

Call it synergy if you wish... I think I just got lucky

Adcom SLC-505 Passive preamp
Adcom GFA-535 (older one without opamp)
1 foot IC connecting the two (shorter the better)

AR18s recapped/reformed speakers
8' 14ga in-wall speaker cables

With a little shopping around all can be had for 300-350 dollars

I've been using an Oppo 105 for the front-in the last 3 days

Best fuel for those. The 18s have ferro-fluid tweets, they can carry big band with ease. :thmbsp:

Today I learned a new expression - Plinky-Plonky Jazz. The Brits use it for generic smooth/easy jazz. I guess 'Merican variant would be elevator jazz? lol

The AR 18 are great speakers. I owned a pair for 7 years. Why they sound especially good, is that there is nothing between the power amp output stage and the 8 inch driver terminals other than cable. The bass/mid driver does not have one single crossover element.

I'd love to hear a pair with a better tweeter and hooked-up to a no-holds barred system with subs.

It'd never be State Of The Art, but it would raise eyebrows.

I thought plinky, ploonky (is it ploonky or plonky?) jazz was like Ron Carter playing solo and that sort of thing... You sure you're not confusing it with schmaltzy, homogenized "women's jazz"?

Uh Oh...... I'm gonna' get a beating for that one... :para:

Hopefully, your audiophile dominatrix won't see the post. :D

Yeah... I'd normally go for a little more top end presence and detail but I have zero doubt that I could enjoy that system for a good, long time.
