just picked this up yesterday, free in exchange for a harman kardon 330b which had a couple issues. it cleaned up pretty good. jw if this reciever is worth anything, good sound quality, etc. thot about restoring it all the way: sanding/staining wood case, getting a couple new leds, and the teacher i got it from said something was wrong with the tuner, but taking it apart and putting it back together revealed no problems. just looking for some opinions. also does anyone have any specs on this model?

If the 5200 is the one I'm thinking of, I've always thought those looked cool. I'm a big fan of old Kenwood gear. The tuners are among the best. I think the amps sound very nice when they are in good shape. My experience is that they are quite powerful for their rated output.

There was just a thread from someone who found a KR-5200, but I cannot locate it. I think they're probably OK. Being a Kenwood, one might fairly expect a pretty good tuner :-)

FWIW, I have a KR-4200... which is nicely built, if nothing else.
 
yea my teacher had this thing in his classroom for the 2 years (and proly before) since ive been in his class and we'd listen to the classic rock station while working. idk exactly what went wrong with it, but it seems fine to me. the volume switch makes a little static when u turn it too fast, but maybe hit that with some contact cleaner and itd b fine. i think itd look really nice with a restored wooden case. all the switches and knobs look really nice. if only i could figgur out how to post pics on here... anyways i hooked my comp into the aux, and it sounded very good. could prolly give my jvc a run for its money. prolly will restore it up, then make a decision as to sell or keep it. anyone kno where i could find leds for it? thanx much
 
I really like mine! This is my main at the moment and appreciate being able to connect 3 sets of speakers. Also experimented using the pre outs into two PM 1.5s. No matter what the configuration, it always sounds great!
 
Ok, after awhile of the sound being fine after I cleaned it, The right channel started to fizzle, go out completely, fizzle, go out completly, then just go out and fizzle a teeny bit every once in awhile. I'm guessing this is what happened, and why my teacher didn't want it. Should I just clean it again and let it stay til it goes out again? Or can someone point me towards the right direction for fixing the problem? Thanx in advance.
 
Yes, you may need to clean several times. Pay close attention to the balance control and the source selector.
 
Thanx, I just got a new can of electronic cleaner and it seems to have taken care of the issue for now. I just don't know what to do with it. I almost was able to give it to some kids who were putting together a vintage stereo, but the right channel thing happened and they ran to the thrift store and bought a damn nice Marantz. I already have a jvc which has more power and features than the kenwood. Maybe I'll just set it up on my desk and use it for a tuner, It looks really awesome. Any opinions?
