Not mine, no affiliation. I think they look kinda dorky, but I have heard a recent set of Fried speakers that sounded incredible, and the brand name does have a cult following. So here you go:

Wigwam, after you turned me onto the BA's I actually started watching shop goodwill. All over it. I did see some of the things regarding their IMF origin but I'm not incredibly familiar with IMF or it's history. It's been some great reading. Anyone have some specs or detailed info?

Only what I have read, probably just what you've read. I do remember that back in the day, the magazines could not stop fawning over Fried speakers. despite (or perhaps because of) their fairly low production numbers.

For some reason, Indy Goodwill sure seems to get a lot of good vintage stuff. It's kind of a tossup between Indy and the states of Oregon and Washington, that's where I seem to see all the high end stuff pop up.

Indy seems to be an okay market but the my buddy Michigannick in Detroit seems to get an epic level score like every 2 or 3 days. I just turned 40 so I didn't have the first hand knowledge of that brand, in fact I've only heard them mentioned periodically. Now that I'm reading up and seeing their common genetic heritage they look like they could be pretty epic. The cabs are pretty ugly what with the raw mdf baffle.

True, that's my thought as well. I'm not sure how high to bid on these things but they look interesting and fun to play with. I've heard a few pairs of KEF and they all sounded very very good. These look incredibly primitive however ;)
 
mccarty350 - please do not get in a bidding war with me on these speakers, as I was hoping to pick them up for a reasonable sum. :D

I was actually only referring to the shopgoodwill.com site; I agree that the metro Detroit area has a lot of nice audio equipment. But for some reason, shopgoodwill seems to really do a lot of nice audio equipment in Indy; at least that's been my observation.

Wigwam do you remember which model you heard that sounded incredible?

The Fried sound didn't come into it's own until he abandoned the use of the Kef drivers. The Kef drivers required a high order crossover.

When Fried had all of his drivers custom made for a first order series crossover the Fried sound became legendary.

Unfortunately I already had a first and max bid set up before I even posted (the one bid there on the site unfortunately is already me, I put it in at 6:15pm on 10/29/2013 before I even posted here). I just was posting to see if I should adjust it. Sadly knowing tons of people in our community results in this stuff, only a few days ago I found out a buddy was bidding on some ESS that were local and I opted out in his favor...unfortunately after he investigated he found out that one of the two heil's was burned out (don't bid on the ESS's for sale in Anderson Indiana, they've already been scoped and have one burned heil at zero ohms, one not measuring properly, and non-original woofers...the seller was made aware and still hasn't stated these things so he's crusing for some ebay trouble when someone buys them) so we both are done. Are you really planning on bidding on them or just tormenting me? For that matter, are you coming over this Saturday? If so PM me your info, looks like a whole lot of AK'ers are coming ;)

No, I don't know which model, but they were fairly new, small MTM style bookshelf speakers. I heard them at a SMAC meet. And I have to say, I am that guy that nobody wants to hear say blasphemous things like "all speakers sound the same to me." Because for the most part, they do. My hearing, I guess. But a few have really stood out to me over the years. A set of Klipsch corner horns. The Fried speakers I mentioned. The Klipsch Heresey speakers. My own late, lamented AR 58S speakers. A few others. Most of the rest, well, they sound kinda-sorta similar to me. Sure, maybe more or less bass, a bit of a honk here or there, but in general, all alike, or at least not enough different to get excited about. But the Frieds, yeah, they really did it for me.

When did this driver shift occur? Would be good info for those who want to try the Fried sound.

Fried started having his drivers sourced for the B-2 and C satellites around 1977. .The B-2 used a Dalesford oem unit with the Dynaudio D-28H tweeter. The original B model used the Kef drivers. Also the T, O and Super Monitor subwoofers used oem Dalesford subwoofers.

These models used a first order parallel crossover while he was experimenting on series crossover circuits that were later used with the C2 satellites and O2 subwoofers.

The list of drivers he used over the years would require starting another thread. :)
 
From what you're saying getting replacement drivers might be a nightmare. I'm guessing if something is blown or burned it would be game over i.e. the replacement driver would either be astronomical or unobtanium.

Always a risk with low-production items from companies that are no longer around, yes.

I certainly do not know if they are or are not common. However, there's a bright side to this kind of situation. When parts are unobtainium and the piece itself is very valuable, then that means that a strong market may exist for the parts that *do* work. Assuming one purchased these and something was non-functional and one could not easily repair it, then one could dismantle and sell the parts, at least recouping all or some of one's loss; perhaps even turning a profit. It's all risk and reward.

Yeah, that was not lost on me. There is a parachute there in the case that the speaker was rendered inoperable due to unobtanium that I could get the money back sure.

I'm one of those chumps that feels like it's a crime to part out a speaker unless there's no way to get it working/it's cost prohibitive but your logic is pretty infallible there. I buy a lot of things with that logic and then end up getting terminally attached to them. I'm more addicted to the fun of restoration and hearing different 'sound flavors' than in buying to resell.
