And Yet More JBL 4430 Stands

OK, with the material left over from making my 4430 stands with round corners, I've now made some with square corners, to match the speaker cabinets better. As with the others, these are also made of 3/4" walnut veneer plywood, with solid walnut corners and 2" nonskid rubber casters hidden underneath. The backs offer plenty of room for outboard crossovers and the stands provide a nice 5" lift.

After this, I am DONE. This was way too much work for my lazy ass.

(Obviously, the casters photo is of the round-corner pair, but it gives you the idea.)

Well you did a very nice job zonker's. Very good grain and color match and kind of nice to be able to just push them around on wheels.

Ah, man; I get tired just thinking of it. This project took freaking months! The good news is, it really gave me some good wood working experience. I'm thinking that I might be up for building a nice midcentury modern credenza now, to house and display my gear in style. :D

Zonk,you enjoying those port "narrowers"? After reading a bunch of posts on the 4430(most from you) I stuffed a couple of towels in my lower ports and it seems as if the 2235's have lost some of their control/dampening. I like the idea of dipping the tune by a hz or two,maybe the result of the plugging is a bit too much for these drivers. I'm used to dealing with high excursion mobile subwoofers. I'm gonna play a few more cd's to better audition the difference as I started the listen with a Cannibal Corpse cd.......yes you're all reading correctly. Been referencing this forum for a few years,joined recently,looking forward to being part of the fun. I love my 4430's btw,they're the first pair of speakers that can produce as much output as they do and still sound great. Thanks Zonk,for all the great info.....love & plan on replicating those stands!
 
Ah yes; thanks for all the kind words! I installed those port liners and left them there; they really seem to deepen the bass and make it smoother!

I had several of those stands for sale on Barter Town and eBay; all gone now; alas!

Check WinISD to graph the response as you close the port(s). You'll get a lower FR, but you'll trade other areas of performance. I would change the length of the tube leaving the port size the same. The selected port size is based on max. SPL of the 4430. A narrower port will cause 'dynamic compression' at high power levels.
My 4507 cabinets with 2235H has 4 ports . The cabinet offers a great range of flexibility in terms of selecting various F3 points ranging from 4430 Tuning (34 Hz) and lower (Appx 31 Hz) to Sub use.
Our friend Zilch noted correctly that the only drawback of the 4507 is the rather narrow port diameter when 2 or more ports are closed. I use the cabs for 32 Hz tuning (2 ports closed). This I feel offers the best setting for home use offering a low FR into the lowest octave (-3dB @ 35 Hz, -6 dB @ 30 Hz
-10 dB @26 Hz) while maintaining great dynamics.
You'll need to determine what modification servers you best. Remember, changing one port will effect the overall performance of the Low Frequency response as well as dynamic range. You can't have it both ways.:yes:
