I had a pair for several years and IMO they were outstanding and were the best "small" high efficiency speakers I've heard. Tonal balance was robust and natural with strong clean bass, vivid midrange and clear, though somewhat rolled off, highs. Dynamics were excellent for a speaker it's size and they could be driven to satisfying volumes with low powered amps such as the 20 wpc Jolida 102 or the Sonic Impacts chip amp. Effortless sound.
The key to the speaker is the 406-8C 10" woofer which has a dual profile cone, a 3" voice coil and the motor from the famous 414 12" woofer. Altec spent considerable effort developing the driver and it gives the lush "technicolor" midrange reproduction of the big dog Altec woofers such as the 414, 416 and 515. IME the smallest speaker which gives the sonic effect of the big Altecs such as the 19, the Duplexes and the VOTs (all of which I've owned, indeed at the time I owned the Boleros I also owned 19s, 605As, AS-21s and A7-500s).
My opinion.
