Receiver suggestions?

My impoverished son (vet of Afghanistan, recent GW grad and now rookie DC cop) is looking for a receiver to use with TV and Klipsch Heresy 1s. I feel that he's better off getting the best used receiver his budget (~$300) will allow, rather than getting a cheap new unit.

I'd like to see him get a unit that includes Audyssey EQ capabilities, if possible.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

What digital interface is required HDMI and/or optical-coaxial would determine where to start looking. Most Denons and Onkyos from a couple years ago in the middle models would have both digital interfaces and Audyssey EQ. The Denon AVR-1612 or AVR-1613 for example can be found in your price range.
 
Soundwise I think they're all about the same, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, etc. As I recall, Yamaha is towards the upper end of reliability, Onkyo toward the lower end due to some (I believe) heat-related HDMI board issues. Marantz I think is OK too, but probably a bit harder to come across than the others.

My current setup is based on a Marantz pre/pro and it has been trouble-free. Had the Yamaha pre/pro been out at the time I'd have taken a real good look at that one too.

That may depend on what version of YPAO you're comparing to what version of Audyssey. My guess, and I sure could be wrong, is that when the OP mentioned Audyssey it was really just being used as a generic reference to automatic calibration, and perhaps correction.

The Onkyo TX-NR626 ($349 @ A4L - refurb) is the exact same as the Onkyo model HT-RC560 ($299 @ few places - new).
I think it's a very very good deal. ...It is fully loaded, it has everything the OP is asking for, and it's right on target with his budget.

Try to find a Denon or Marantz receiver equipped like that! ...And @ that price!

And Yamaha, Pioneer, etc.; they don't support Audyssey MultEQ. ...YPAO & MCACC (different, and inferior). :)

Nowadays everybody is doing automatic calibration. But not everyone is doing automatic equalization the same.

From what I can read, the OP doesn't intend to complicate his son's life with manual parametric EQ (you need sophisticated instrumentation to do an adequate job).
Audyssey MultEQ is more advanced, and fully automatic (pure simplicity) and efficient (it works better than those other Auto Room Calibration and EQ systems).
To have Audyssey MultEQ and Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume in a $300 receiver is simply mind blowing!
...Plus all the other stuff that it has (just check that link above)! ...And plenty of HDMI inputs (6 In/2 Out).

Shure, he can get an older/used receiver like the Onkyo TX-SR805, or TX-SR876 (2007-2008 models, and both with MultEQ XT, and THX Ultra certification) for roughly the same money; but in what true actual condition, and guaranty? ...Two real power (true RMS watts with all channels driven) monsters, but no need with Klipsch speakers. And! ...No Ethernet port plus none of all the newest features of a modern receiver.

I've been running an all-in-the-box Onkyo HT for 10 years. It doesn't have the connections and outputs of the modern ones but, for the price, it sounds good. Never a problem with it but it does run hot if driving larger, inefficent speakers. At 125 watts x 6, it's done the job.

No, they don't support Audyssey. Why would they? They have their own systems that you've mentioned

There debate on which is superior when you're comparing roughly apples to apples. There are a few different flavors of Audysessy and there are older and newer versions of both MCACC and YPAO. Some say Anthem's ARC is better than those, then there are versions/brands beyond that as well.

im hoping my possible win of a Denon AVR 800 for 102 bucks is worth it. It has both HDMI, and a phono pre, so it hits everything i need....but i havent heard if its a dog or not yet...in 4 mins, it may be mine, for better or worse. 1 min 40, and ive been passed. gonna try to get it with 7 secs.
