Very Cool System...

Had the chance to listen to this system today. I was very, very impressed. A friend built the entire thing, aside from the turntable (Mitchell Cotter).

Very impressive system and listening room as pictured. Any further details re the system, make/models. The Mitch Cotter turntables are rare, did you notice what motor unit and tonearm/cartridge was installed in the Mitch Cotter plinth?

Nice, in several ways. Aside from the carpet, what will prevent sound from ricocheting all over that room?

Interesting placement of the listening chair. Is the room small?

Not particularly. He has a thing for an earphone-esque setup. The guy who built the system uses a placement about 5 feet back from the "listening chair", which presents much more depth and soundstage. However, the setup there is still not optimal, due to the toe-in for the owner's listening chair. It still rocks though.

I do not know the drive system. The arm is a Fidelity Research 1066, with a japanese LOMC stereo cart (same company for Mono), a custom silver coiled Step-up transformer, and some other goodies. The amps are all direct coupled, and the mid/high amps were capable of using a number of different tubes. We were using "Mesh 50s" at the time. I will dig into the detail a little more.

Yes....waaaaay too close. It's like having speakers for headphones.

Yes.

Not much. It was a Tribeca loft, nicely decorated but not treated for sound in any meaningful way. There are some soft panels behind the center stack, but that's about it.

Serious toe-in for sure......

Indeed.

Thank you for your detailed answers. The system intrigues me. When I was first married, we rented a small part of a home where the homeowners would not tolerate noise of any kind. To listen to music, I set up two small Celestions on kitchen chairs, hooked up a bone stock Dynaco Stereo 70 and Pas3 with some turntable, and sat on the floor with the speakers perhaps four feet apart and about 3 feet in front of me. Preamp set to almost OFF! I swear that I think I have never heard greater depth of soundstage from any set up, perhaps due to the proximity. Whether or not this makes acoustic sense, I cannot say. Nevertheless, for wide open sound, few experiences have rivaled this.

Now for a very unrelated question: regarding the TRIangle BElow CAnal St., I have seen it written both ways. Which is (more) correct, TRI-BE-CA or Tribeca?
