Sony APM 615's at T.S. - square 3-ways

Very cool... but I have so many speakers....

Has anyone heard these speakers? Very good condition, surrounds look top-notch, gold colored drivers, pedestal style base.

I have some APM-690's pretty good speakers but the low/mid end of the APM line. I think 615's are similar from the one pic I could find on the web.

Sony made APMs for all price points. From lowly monitor mounted speakers to monsters with cast woofers. The easiest way to tell where these fall in the food chain is to look at the woofers. Is the trim around the woofers plastic? The cheap ones had fake driver trim pieces. If you remove them, there are stamped metal baskets underneath (unlike the cast baskets of the high end models). There are a pair of cheap APMs at a local GW (last I checked) and I suspect they came with a Sony rack system.

The ones I showed in the pic above are the cheaper, plastic framed, steel basket, single VC version. Nice speakers but not special. The high end ones have cast frames and 4 or 5 VC's per woofer.

I don't think I ever mislead you on these. Good speakers but not the sought after APM's. I have piles of KLH's come and get them :>)

I need that tube amp NOW!

I think theyre cool looking - just the other day I stumbled on a page how to actually refoam the square woofers. Its was all in japanese, The author of the page made his own surrounds with fabric and some mystery chemicals.

I know. I was just kidding. I do think I wanted them to be better than they are though, to ease my lust for the bigguns of the APM line.

Why don't you stack all those KLHs (didn't you say you have 11?) into a line array and see how you like the sound?

DonC on AK has some of the high end APM-8's that MarkA is doing some surrounds on. Any reports on the progress on those yet?

Actually, I kinda backed off of that because Don posted some time ago that he had made surrounds for the woofers and was working on surrounds for the mids - or something like that. - Mark

The speakers at the thrift store are very similar to the ones pictured above, except they have the pedestal style base. I did not see any grills for them... they would be neato for a porch stereo - I think they wanted $40 for them.

Lovely speakers. Definately with major shortcomings but also spectacular in certain matters: sweetspot sensitive but very tight image, excellent detail and fantastic mid range (in the details)... these are really great for vocals.

Rated to 300W (I was told by owner)
est efficiency ~90db/W/m

There's some of those 615s local to me- I could get 'em and ship 'em out to you if you'd like. He/she wants $40 and shipping would probably be $40 to $60 so this might not be worth it to you. Anyhow, let me know and I'll do what I can for you.

You want to talk low end of the APM line...................these came with my Sony Profeel KX-2501 25" Monitor, vintage 1985. :banana:

the 22ES is part of the 2nd lineup of APMs ; the 1st was the monster APM-8, APM-6 and APM-4 - horrendously expensive and x-rare. Not really from this world...

The 2nd lineup, affordable this time, circa 1981, was made of the 77ES, later augmented by the 44ES and 22ES ; even later there was a 66ES added, the latter seeing three or four different versions.

So the 22ES was at the lower-end of the higher end

Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass. I heard Kelly's 690s and, well, I'd rather hold out for the APM-8s that are in my top 5 dream speaker list.

No sweat. With the cost of shipping, they stop being a bargain in my opinion. $80 to $100 for these doesn't seem like anything spectacular of a deal.

I'll keep my eyes open for some $40 APM-8s for you though!

I'd sure appreciate it, though I suspect if you do find a pair for that price, you'll be keeping them for yourself. Just have a look at Axel's site on those speaks.
