Located a pair of Pioneer A-50 loudspeakers....any info?

Hey everyone,

Ive been away for awhile...busy with school and all. Anywho, I found a pair of Pionner A-50 loudspeakers, I believe thay are 4-way rated at 60 watts 8 ohms and from the mid 60's. Anyone familiar with these? Curious as to how efficient they are, as I have an old Voice of Music 1428 I need some speakers for.

Any info would be awsome,

Hi.

I bought a pair of A-50's 3 years ago. In fact I posted here when I bought them, and posted pix also. I like these. I have them hooked up to a Marantz 2220b. However, I have them in a small room and not really putting these speakers in the best place. These were made in the late 60's I beleive....so probably made for small watt tube amplification. I would not put more than 25 - 30 watts into these A-50's.
Try them with all your stuff, see what matches up best.

I have a pair of CS A50s that I purchased new in 1966/7 in Australia. There was nothing to compare with these fantastic speakers at the time here except maybe Goodmans Richard Allans and Wharfedale (all British). Altecs had a bold sound but weren't as real. As far as I know I have the only pair of CS A50s in Australia as they were here on demo only. I blew up the capacitors in one of the x/overs and would love to get the original specs as they have no values on them just a number like 5 or 7. Anyone who would like to communicate with me re these speakers I'd love to hear from you. dixons@bigpond.net.au

The CS-A50 appear to be somewhat distinguished, in that Pioneer built them using the AS-305A Speaker Kit.

I have never seen an AS-305A kit. But, I have not been specifically watching for one either, so they may be out there. However, I doubt it.

I would think that any crossover that provided 500 Hz and 3500 Hz could be adapted. Or, now that the crossovers are known, perhaps the one you have can be repaired.

I did a quick search, and the CS-F700 and CS-F900, both from around 1976, provide 560 Hz and 3500 Hz, so maybe they could be used/adapted. The CS-10 and CS-77 are at 600 and 3500. All of these operate in the 50 to 60w range.

Here is a quick pic of mine. I have them in use with my Fisher 500C. they are good speakers for tubes. Far better than my AR4xs with the Fisher.

They are gold woven fabric cords. They look like metal in the picture. The metal trim is gold color. The grills are not removable. I have only seen the speakers from the back when I inspected them and cleaned the pots. These are my favorite Pioneers. Probably due to their age and uniqueness.

Twist72, if you haven't already, grab those.
 
Here are a couple of pics of my A 50s. As you can see the badges have the model number on them. They are a bit knocked about as my brother used them for years as his main monitor speakers in his recording studio in the late 60s early 70s. After getting bored with my B and W 803s, one day I pulled the A50s out of storage only to be astounded by the sound after all these years. Yes unique! Jazz and percussion is amazing. During the 70s "colored" sound was not in vogue, but I'm yet to find a speaker that can handle all types of music. Just put a 1957 vinyl of the Firehouse 5 plus 2 or any of Arthur Lyman's exotic performances and no speaker will sound better than the a 50s.

While on the subject of A 50s, Can anybody tell me if the CS 901s are as bad as the review bestowed upon them on this forum some time back. There are a pair listed locally (Australia) on ebay and I was wondering how they compared to the A 50s for example. It's rare that we see vintage pioneer stuff here. I thought I could use them at my holiday shack?
