Fried Super Monitors and C3L - Suggestions Needed

Hello - I recently picked up a set of Fried Super Monitors with C3L trapezoidal heads - Unfortunately the original spiders and surrounds on the Dalesford 12" woofers are both shot and the dalesford midranges work but have damage to the surrounds - Wondering if anyone knows of decent or better replacements for the 12", 6.5" and tweeter -

Replace? Rebuild? Any info would be helpful

Those look like the Carboneau drivers not the Dalesford.

Bill Le Gall can repair and rebuild those drivers but it will be expensive.

It is very difficult to find suitable replacement drivers since Fried had many of his drivers custom made.

I have someone locally who can rebuild the 12" woofers - Was wondering if there were any upgrades worth poking around with for the mids/tweeters or either set of crossovers

First set of Frieds that I've owned - Hoping to be blown away when everything is set up

Girlfriend hates the looks of the Transmission Line bass enclosures - Any suggestions on hiding these bad boys? My initial thought was to have a big pair of socks made (Lazy mans fix) but looking in the basement I've got a nearly full bucket of Duratex staring me in the face, Although if I'm going through the trouble of priming and sanding the cabs I might as well drop them off at the local auto paint shop to get blasted... Hmmmm....

The C3L crossover was changed over time.
I would have to know the values used in your model to be of any help.

Because of the zero plain delay on the sloped front baffle a horn loaded tweeter like the Hiquphon must be used.
Using a dome tweeter that is not horn loaded will have the tweeter frequencies arrive a few milliseconds before the mid bass driver frequencies to the listener's ear.

The Super Monitor 3 sub was the last model that used a 12" driver.
Finding a suitable drop in replacement would be very difficult.

Some people have used the former Vifa now Scan Speak P17WJ-00-08 as a drop in replacement for the C3L model.
The driver specs closely match the Fried OEM 6.5" drivers.
Would this driver perform as good as the original Carboneau 6.5" is unknown to me.

One ownership of Fried Products was selling the Silver Flute 6.5" as replacements for the C3L model.
These have 6 holes in the frame and not 4 like the Carboneau 6.5".
The crossover would require some modifications in values to achieve a flat response.

Are the surrounds on your model a foam rubber surround or the butyl rubber?

I would replace the caps and resistors in the crossover.

The surrounds on both were butyl but they were cracked when I bought the speakers - I dropped the 12's and the 6.5's off to my speaker guy for a rebuild as the spiders and surrounds were shot, says hes done many Carboneau drivers in the past and there should be no problem - I will post pics when I get them back - I have a few projects going on right now but I plan to recap both crossovers as soon as I can

Apologies - Really behind on these - Got the woofers back a while ago and I think they look and sound great - My guy couldn't guarantee that the dust caps would glue and stay on the 12" due to being warped so we decided to go with a modern dust cap. Attached some pics - Took a look at the C3L crossovers but I haven't recapped them yet - I haven't even looked at the SM xover

Picked up a brand new set of Hiquphon OWII tweeters -

I am planning on putting everything together soon, I just haven't had time or energy due to work

Got a quote from a local cabinet maker to redo the vaneer on both the C3L and SM cabs but for $400 It would be nearly more than I paid for the speakers, Tweeters and recones combined

Thanks - I thought they came out very nice - Alan Helms out of Danbury CT does my rebuilds/recones/refoams - (DSR Audio, or Dustysamps on that auction site) - Always great results and prices are very reasonable - I will probably be picking up a set of the Silver Flute 6.5's as well

Some used a .5mh 18 gauge air core coil and some used a .35 mh coil
Fried changed the tweeter R1 and R2 values as well.

I would replace the sand cast resistors with the non inductive wire wound type.
I have used the Link since they are available in exactly the right values.

The cap on the Zobel was changed a few times depending on the driver specs from certain batches but looks fine.

As long as the 6.5" Carboneau drivers perform fine I would stick with them over the Viifa or Silver flute unless you were to try building a clone.
The double stacked magnet structure keeps the voice coil immersed in the magnetic field with the Fried Carboneau drivers.
