Red got contacted by a gentleman in PA who has a Model 24 Anniversary FISHER CONSOLE. Turns out his wife's Father bought this new, and she inherited it.
It has some problems with the tuner, and probably needs a rebuild. So I agreed to take a look at it. We've communicated and it turns out that he has already taken out the guts (except the turntable and speaker...advise to leave Jensen in, tiedown the WEBCOR before moving.) and it HAS GOT both the DYNAMIC Noise Suppressor and the EXPANDER Modules. He's gonna bring all his paperwork with him (includes manuals, etc.). Thanks to Red, I've now got the Manual for the 24 series, but nothing for this model Noise suppressor or Dynamic Expander. From what I understand from the owner his paperwork is probably the same as what I have right now.

FISHERDUDE and VAGUY1; If you recognize the expander and suppressor and have anything on them, I'd appreciate any help.....


1st off is to test the tubes. I'll do that while he's here and give him a list of bad ones (if any). If not, then I'll bring it up on a variac/dbt and see what's what.

Yep. Short lived on FISHER's. By the R-1 Chassis (about 2 years later) no shortwave on them.

Speaker is a JENSEN 15" Coax. Mid November 1948. So this is a 1949 Model. about 2 years older then my WR-11 with an R-3 chassis.

Larry, could you post a blow by blow account of the restoration when you get started? I'd be very interested to follow along as you minister to this old soldier.

The Anniversary Series chassis (24,24A & 24B) was the one the company's reputation was built on - though I think it was the earlier S-9 that was held up as the best of the post-war radio combinations in the famous "Golden Ear" article in Fortune, (Oct. 1946). Really the 24 was really just a refinement of the S-9. Years later in the early 50s when Fisher was bidding for government contracts, this was one of the examples of their work they included to demonstrate their skill at design, assembly and quality control. This was the spec sheet they included:

Interesting that by standards now of even a piece of crap, the specs of the Fisher suck. Guess it lends some credence that objective measurements need not equate with actual performance.

What is more surprising is that while most of focus on vintage stereo, vintage mono may be even more interesting and satisfying. Imagine back then when listening to FM you had the potential of 20-20khz that exceeded records and cartridges at the time. It was a sad day when the FCC limited its range to 15khz.

I hope this unit is brought back fully to its original glory and performance as it is an intergenerational family heirloom and looks like it was well appreciated and kept. Something and a practice that is fast disappearing.

Larry: I have a print on an expander but it has loctal tubes in it tubes are 7A6;7F7;7A7 AND 5Y3.dont know how to scan to get this to you. if you know please tell me and I will try to do it. BTW your supresser is slightly diffrent than mine mine has one more tube in it. do not have anything on the noise supressor sorry. good luck with your restro.Norman
 
Is there any chance that the scan of the early expander can be recentered? It appears to have chopped off the top portion of the schematic.

Norm; Thanks. I don't have the units yet, so don't know which tubes are on it. When I get the units I'll list them individually by model # with the tubes on each.

Please recenter the sheet you have so the top isn't cut off.

I think Aerobat's Magnavox console may have that same record changer. He modified his to take a moving magnet cartridge and track lighter. I don't know if he posted specifics, but you could ask, all else failing.

The Model 24 Serial 1612 showed up today. ALL 4 CHASSIS's. That's right. TUNER, AMP, Dynamic Volume Expander, and Noise Suppressor, Plus the Webcor Model 256 turntable, aJENSEN H510 (220846) COAX (8CELLULAR HORN version)12" speaker, which except for the aging on the paper looks like it just came off the assy line!:ntwrthy: And :jawdrop: 2 Single Needle GE Variable Reluctance cartridges:drool: in SEPARATE Headshells, 1 brn, 1 red. :jawdrop: I sent the Headshells and the speaker back home with the owner.

No pictures yet as camera need new batteries. But about 1/2 of the tubes test below the marginal/replace line on the EICO. Time to double check with the Philco (Hickok 533). Most of the marginals/bads are the 7V loctals!!! As were the 6L6GA (replaced with 6L6WGB's) and the 5Y3 Rectifiers. Gotta get some of the 5Y3's before i power it all up, as I only have 5U4GB's here, and the EZ-81's don't fit period :sigh:

Overall for 65 year old chassis's there is a surprising lack of rust or discoloration on the outsides.

I'll update regularly as i muddle thru this one.
