EPI 100 or Dynaco A-25?

Clash of the real titans.

An eight inch driver in matched acoustic suspenion box vs. a 10" riding a tuned port. The most astouding tweeter design 'ever' vs 'SEAS' magic.

Those few that have both, please weigh in. Be specific. There may not be a winner, but what are the advantages of each? Please convince me that the Dnayco is worth the same consideration that has caught my sustained attention for the last 15 years. Thanks. -sf

I have both and use both on a regular basis.

My EPIs are hooked up to a Marantz receiver and sound very good. The highs are nice and mellow the way I like them. Bass is good for a small cabinet speaker. All around one of my favorites.

The Dyanco's are an amazing speaker crystal clear highs and very good bass for its size. These have been hooked up to a Sherwood S-5500 and Pilot 245-A. Both tube integrateds. The Dyanco's with the tubes are a speaker I cold plop down in front of and last the whole day. Plays all kinds of music well. Very dynamic speakers also.

My choice would be for the Dynaco's, but in all fareness I'd have to hook the EPI's to the tubes and have a listen. Both are great 2-ways and I won't be giving either pair up in the near future.
 
I'd swing Dynaco. Even the A-10's make for a superlative soundstage driven by clean components. Silky smooth throughout it's seemingly limitless range. Paired with another incredible set like the ADS L400's for more presence and a quality woofer and there's no need for anything else!
 
Choose either, and you can't go wrong.

I really liked the Dynacos I was around back in the day. They were very impressive in the late sixties, early seventies (poor man's AR3a's we thought). When the large Advents came out, suddenly there was competition.

But then came the EPI 100's, which simply stood above them both sonically. The 100 is an amazing little box, shocking in its simplicity and sound.
 
Blondes or Brunettes.......Depends on the day, and the lighting in the Tavern :naughty: I say both as well. I have 2 pair of EPI 100's and a pair of very simular Genesis I's....It is impossible to go wrong with either. That being said, I have had a pair the A 25's less than 24 hours and man are they sweet as well. I would not even consider choosing one. In fact I doubt that I ever part with any of the mentioned three.

I also have 2 pairs of EPI 100's,and I wouldnt give them up for the world.It would take a really special pair of speakers to displace these as my speakers of choice in my listening room.The other pair,BTW are being used at a friends house with an SX-780 I also let him use.Something tells me I may never see this setup again :scratch2: I think the A25's will definetly be my next speaker to try.

.....I was afraid that would be the case. :) The EPI M150's are the speaker that I cannot imagine ever hearing outdone (need to be postioned about 12" above the floor at a slight tilt)....... My wife will kill me.....

No takers for the 100?

In reading a bit more here and on the web on the A25, I kind of suprised that the few responding to the thread all chose the Dynaco. Descriptions for the A25 have included 'slightly dark', understated compared to others, and other posts described needing to have tweeter grills and/or speaker grills removed, a bass roll-off at 50Hz via the aperiodic vent. (One does not find any qualifiers like that for EPI100/Genesis I.)

The 100 is certainly not an understated speaker, even before you replace that 10 uF cap it has for a crossover. The acoustic suspension design and 8" woofer gives a very punchy low end -the 8" vs 10" driver would also have to be a major source of difference in the sound of the two speakers.

I'm not disagreeing, as I've not heard the A25 yet. Just a bit suprised, and a bump for the thread. -sf

I chose both.....I wouldn't want to be without either. But for different reasons. Each on has it's own identity, and each one is an absolutly excellent speaker. :yes:
 
I have A25's and just picked up a pair of Genesis 10's yesterday. I have only about 4 hours of listening on them, but was very pleased with the sound for both jazz and rock music. I have to have them go head to head, but I think both are hard to beat.
