Saba Breisgrau Automatic 8

Hello, this is my first post besides my intro.
I just want to show you a console I bought. My plan was to fix replacing the original radio with a new receiver and sell it for a profit but I liked it a lot so I'm gonna keep it.
It's a Saba Breisgrau Automatic 8.
I know nothing about tube audio and I don't know if this is good or bad gear. I do know that it comes with original green cone speakers and, according to some paperwork I found inside, it was sold in 1966 here in Mexico.

I'll post more pics when I can, and I'll post updates when I get it working.

I haven't even cleaned the thing, sorry if it looks bad. I got it on the street for around $50 including original paperwork and a pair of cabinets that I plan to restore, I'll post those in the speaker forums as I don't even know where to mount the speakers.
 
How is the saba unit working for you?

I picked up a saba 400 automatic radio in a similar fashion in Dallas. It was just too interesting looking to pass up. My unit is a studio version which requires external speakers to be connected. My 400 is working great except for the automatic seek buttons, which I have not worked on yet. I use it primarily for playing vinyl albums.
 
I've heard that the Saba "green cone" speakers are quite desirable.


Saba made pretty nice gear. Its German, which means its probably a pain to work on, but it also usually means that it works very well when working. I'm a big fan of German radios, even though most people just cuss at them for their cramped quarters. Its not that terrible. I've done a couple of TV sets, German radios are not that bad by comparison.
 
The SABA "Freiburg", technically related to the "Breisgau", is the BEST stereo tube radio in this universe, absolutely! :yes:

The "8" means that your "Breisgau" had been built in 1958.

Nice! Mine is not working at all. I decided to save some money and send it to someone competent one of this days, but I have other priorities right now, sadly.

That sounds a lot like German cars in general and my Volvo. Pain to work on, but they work great when they work haha

I also found out about those green cones. I really want to listen to them but I need to send the radio for repairs to someone who knows what he/she is doing, unlike me haha

Actually the 8 is just the tube count. The actual date will be ink stamped on the chassis, and sometimes the cabinet, but you have to search for it, Now, it might be a 1958 model, but I doubt it.

Other than filter caps, and degraded die cast parts, there is not much that goes wrong with them unless someone messed up the power supply.

Oh, and if yours looks like it is missig a tube- it probably is not- it is a test umbilical connection.

No doubt about my comments, sir! :no: Yours are nonsense, sorry. The 8 stands for 1958! The Breisgau has 10 tubes and was the top of the line back then! I am simply perfect in SABA model history and SABA history in general. Trust me! :yes:

If you click on the picture a second time it enlarges even more so you can at least read and partly understand some of the the numbers. The models Lindau 8 and Breisgau 8 were built from Fall 1957 until Fall 1958.

Some more examples:

SABA Freiburg 3: 1950 + 3 --- 1953

SABA Breisgau 11: 1950 + 11 --- 1961

SABA Freudenstadt 18: 1950 + 18 --- 1968

No rule without exception, as we say in the Fatherland, so the models built in 1960 got no 10, but 125, because this year was the 125th anniversary of this very remarkable audio brand.
