Very interesting info on the 2500 and 2600 tranny

While doing a search for the 2500e model info I came across this:

TRANSFORMADOR TOROIDAL Modelos MARANTZ 2500 / 2600 Eng. Antonio Pelli Neto

I am not sure if it's a repost or new information....

The link doesn't seem to work but I think I've seen it before. This was about using some toroid power transformer I believe. It looks like the mondo amp / heatsink tunnel is out in these pictures, probably to get space to do the conversion.

Link should be working now....

Ah yes, the link is good now. Very interesting even though written in Portuguese (I think). I din't see any part number for that transformer, perhaps it was custom wound from specs? :scratch2:

I sent the author an email, asking for the part number... No response yet.

Hi txturbo,

Sorry for not answering your email, but I believe that has gone into the spam box.:saywhat:

The transformer is custom made for me. The text is in Portuguese and I will translate some important parts into English. So, who knows, may help someone restore her loved marantz ....

What is the smaller transformer doing in the unit in the last pic? Doesn't the toroid handle the requirements?

Awesome work by the way.

Hi,

The last image contains a small transformer connected in series (secondary) with the toroid for the voltages necessary for the operation of Marantz. This was the first attempt. Then I requested a new transformer, as shown in the text translated into English.

A few months ago, I was looking for components to complete a new DIY amplifier and acquired a new Marantz 2600. The price was reasonable ($ 800) for a unit that was not working. The big advantage is that the transformer is OK and it was possible to check all voltages. All values are within the original transformer.

Great work! I don't have the schematics and parts lists for both the 2500 and 2600 in front of me so I'll ask the question.

Are the two amp boards essentially the same, down to the outputs and most of the transistors between the two units?

Are the power supply boards also similar between the two units?

If they were, wouldn't, in general terms, using the 2600 spec transformer in the 2500 give an additional 50W output boost, not that that would materially matter?

The Marantz 2600 is an upgrade of the Marantz 2500. Thus, the project is essentially the same.

However, if you want to use the 2600 transformer in 2500 some components must be updated in order to further dissipation due to the higher power. Essentially, the reservoir capacitor must be changed to 105v and some components of the output board should have changed values to avoid oscillations.

All others boards are exactly the same. Marantz 2600 also include Quartz Lock, the 2500 does not.

Hello Antonio,
I just happen to see your report.
Its great work indeed.
I have been trying to find some information on 2600 transformer as I own a 2600 with a unserviceable transformer.
Grateful if you could help me to find a new transformer.
Thanks,
With kind regards,
Sam

Hi Sam,
I think the better way you can get the transformer is a request for a customer made. I know some professionals who do this type of service, but the cost for shipping outside Brazil is prohibitive.
Perhaps the best way is to get two transformers that can be stacked: one for the amplifier (dual channel) and another for the other voltages. The first one is easier to get. You can use something between 65v and 74v.

Thanks Antonio, It's difficult to find a place which could do that kind of work here. I have the original transformer(unserviceable).
I was thinking of rewinding it but I have no idea of the exact turns to use.

With the value of a 2600 reaching over $6000 I suspect shipping a part from anywhere on the planet would be no issue.

Can you share where you got yours from? :D
