Technics RS 630 US cassette deck

My good old Pionner CTF-2121 gave up the ghost (needs new heads and capstan). So I bought (e-bay) a Technics RS 630 US cassette deck (it's still in the mail, coming over from Germany). Do you guys know anything about this deck? As far as I remember (30 years back!) it was a very good deck. I got all the info I could from www.vintagetechnics.com, but I want to know how good (or bad?) it is. :scratch2:

I've got the RS-630T model which is practically identical. Its the same as the one in the photo only with larger Level knobs. Great sounding deck, but quite tempremental with what cassette you put in it. Some tapes sound amazing in it (arguably better than CD!) whilst others go all dull and muffled after 5 seconds of playback, but my machine may just need fixed. And its quite hard to fix them due to being horizontally loading. Let us know how you get on with it.

Thanks for the info Kenwoodlover. That's all I needed to know. I'll keep you posted when it arrives. Could you mention the best sounding cassettes on the particular deck?
There's also a review for this deck in the russian site "analogaudio" melofelo and countzero posted (thanks guys, great site for vintage tape/cassette lovers). :thmbsp:
 
I have the RS-631 that I bought new. It's been a great deck and still sounds surprisingly good. Without a doubt, TDK-SA sounds the best. The Cr02 setting was calibrated to work best with the TDK-SA. Good luck and enjoy! :music:

Still new to this forum and resurrected this thread because I just picked one of these up about a week ago or so...

I was wondering if there is a users manual available (and service manual if that's out there too).

The belt was stuck to the large metal wheel in the drive assembly (which had collected some oxidation), so I got it for very cheap and was able to free it up without any trouble. The capstan had a squeak, but it appears that has cleared itself up too. It's now running just fine--and with certain tapes--sounds pretty decent. I'd like to regrease the bearings in the drive assembly and whatnot, but in the meanwhile I'd like to know what the functions are--specifically, the "Timer Stand By".

Any other advice or wisdom would be greatly appreciated, I'd really like to get this thing into peak condition--the heads *are* in good condition.
 
It's in the turntable forum because that's where tape stuff used to be. Was separated some time ago. This happens when someone piles on to a 9 year old thread instead of starting a new one in the right place.
