Yamaha 1988 top o' the line

If you come across a sweet stack of gear and don't post it, did it really happen? :D

Last week I came across a CL ad for the following items:

MX-1000
CX-1000
TX-1000
KX-1200
DT-60

Plus a couple DBX items and another tape deck.

The (now former) owner had picked these up overseas while stationed in Germany, so they have the multi-voltage options. The price was right so I took them all home.

I don't have everything hooked up yet, but am listening to the MX-1000 and TX-1000. One word - wow! What an impressive amp. And the TX-1000 is an excellent tuner. I wasn't sure if the KX-1200 would work or not, or if the belt was busted, but lo and behold it works and also sounds really good.

The CX-1000 is missing the power and source direct button caps. What's the best way to clean up the glue? What can you do for replacements?

The CX-1000 remote is missing, but I have the remotes for the tuner and tape deck.

I'll add some pics when I get it set up.

Awesome Yamaha rig. I only had the CA-2010/CT-1010 setup for vintage Yamaha and miss the sound. Looks forward to seeing some pics. Others will chime in on the buttons. You might have to do what I have done with other gear and that is look for a non-functional units and take what you need.

Congrats on the score. I'd be all sorts of excited about getting all of them from the original owner. I got my C-80 and M-60 from a Navy pilot who bought them overseas. It seems like a vast amount of the stuff we are buying now is thanks to the cold war, ha.

I would keep an eye out on the auction site for the buttons. There are a few people there who part out systems and sell the bits for fairly reasonable prices.

I recently bought the rear AC plugs for my C-80 and a speaker terminal for a Pioneer SX-8, two parts that I figured I'd NEVER find but there they were. Worth looking and maybe shooting the seller an email.

Here are a few pics, not great but they give you the idea. These are the amp, preamp and tape deck. Tuner, timer etc. are off screen. Listening to cassettes again is a real time warp.

Any advice on how to clean the exterior cases and switch covers? A little soap and water?

I use a Swiffer duster then Invisible glass on a microfiber to clean.
After it's clean I'll use a light wax like quick detail to go over the rest and polish with a microfiber.
Lately I've been using a product called Dazzle but it's pro only as far as I know and I have to get it from my detail guy. Basically you want a light wax that won't dry hard and leave deposits in textured surfaces or in between buttons and stuff.
Using this technique all of my stuff looks brand spanking new and the wax coat keeps finger prints from sticking and making it look terrible.

Thanks, that's a handy list.
Is this the wax you've been using - Dazzle?

I believe that is the wax. Super easy to use and take off as long as you apply it with a fairly wet cloth.

Wow,very, very nice find. Get that deck cleaned and demagnetised then try recording on a quality Chrome or Metal cassette. You will be amazed at how good that format can sound. I have the model a couple down from that, the KX-800. Something really cool about adjusting record levels and other settings, before recording and then playing back some music in...Shock Horror..Real time. Enjoy :)

Never owned any of this stuff. I am sure it's nice, but man I do not like the blackface stuff from this time period.
I let it slide on my AU 919. :D

Congratulations.

The MX-1000 & CX-1000 are excellent.

I second that....Really nice find. Congrats!

The CX-1000 is the black face version of the CX-2000. I personally prefer the black stealth look. Sourcing original buttons won't be easy. Some members here have made their own. My CX is also missing one button cover.

The MX is a beast. One of the best amps Yamaha made. Now you need a serious set of speakers :D.
Get is serviced soon! It will need new caps, but mostly it will need a full re-solder job. These amps suffer from cold joints (I found it in the three MX-1000's I own now)...oh yes, I must mention..This stuff is addictive:yes: :yes::D

I have the amp hooked up right now to a pair of AR 3a's. No problem driving these, the amp barely breaks a sweat. Those are the most demanding speakers I own, but now I know if I come across something more power hungry I can drive them.

I haven't opened it up yet to see how complex it is to recap the boards. I think I read that someone, maybe Avionic, had created a special jig to work on this model, so it seems there is some PITA factor.

Regarding the button covers, creating new ones does seem like the surest way to replace. Are they just rectangular pieces of flat plastic?

Yes and Yes

"...there is some PITA factor." Yes there is...it would be no fun otherwise.

Avionic is The Man. If you feel this kind of task is overwhelming for you, see if he would be willing to take it in for some TLC....

The plastic is rectangular and the top is beveled (look closely at the other buttons). If you look through the forums...you will find that someone has mentioned making custom ones out of video tape case plastic..if I remember correctly. I am missing one and I would sure like to find a solution myself. Cutting up the video tape does not sound appealing to me. I would prefer to buy a button if one was for sale. Unfortunately, this seems to be Achilles hill of this pre-amp, thus we are not the only ones with missing button covers.

I do not know much about the AR3a's. Are they speakers from the 60's?

Be careful with that dial..that amp is conservatively rated 260w @ 8R ...

Thanks for the extra info on the buttons. I see similar units on eBay sales are often missing their buttons too.

The AR 3a's are 4 ohm speakers, relatively low sensitivity. I've been playing it safe with them.

Those model Yamaha units, and a few others, have provided me with years of enjoyment.
I love the remote volume.
Yes, I did fashion buttons out of VHS case and you can too:)

rated 80 watts at 4 ohms, no issues for many years, until I traded them in.
