Utah A-100 Speakers/Pawn Shop

Saw a pair of Utah speakers today at a Pawn Shop. According to the manufacturer`s tag on the back they are Model A-100 with a 12" woofer and can handle 60 watts. I think it may have said 3-way system also. Not real sure about that. They were in fairly good shape. Some scratches but could be refinished[solid wood cabinets]. The grills are white and look pretty good. They remind of Dynaco A-25 grills. I could not see the surrounds to see their shape. And I did not listen to them. The price was $42.95. I`m sure they could be had for less. Maybe $30 or so. I really don`t need them but I may go back tomorrow and check them out.

Does anyone know anything about these speakers? They kinda look like they may be from the 60`s.

I've had a pair of these. If I remember correctly, the surrounds are coated paper or fabric. I'll bet they're still in good shape. I'll also bet the caps are need replacing, mine did. They'll sound a little flat until you service the crossovers.
 
Utah was originally a speaker driver maker- they built drivers for radios and music amps and PA systems from the 1920s onward.. Magnatone and Fender amps were just some of the amps with these drivers in them. In the 60s or 70s they dabbled with home speakers, but I dunno how good they sounded. I see 'em occasionally go for as low as $24, but usually around $40 and sometimes more. What would I pay? $10 to $30, but then again, some of the woofers they built were built like tanks, so they may be worth more. Or they could sound like a guitar amp, and although playing your stereo through guitar amps is fun for about 2 or 3 minutes, gets pretty tiring to do any longer.

Used some Utah woofers in a project once, and was surprised at just how decent they sounded -- nice, subtle yet full bass, even at lower volumes. In fact, I still have them, and they'd have to be my longest surviving pair of speakers in the ever-changing home rotation. :) With their cloth surrounds and vigorous construction, they will probably last forever.
 
For $30 I'd grab em!

I'm listening to some utah fullrangers and like them quite a bit.
 
I've had many variations of Utah speakers and drivers and they have all been good speakers. Not mind blowing but good solid speakers. I have some 12" full rangers that look like the third pic thedelihaus posted and like them a lot. Good stuff, I'd go $30 if in nice shape and your looking for something like this.
 
I have a pair of Utah A 70A's 10" 3 way and they are good solid performers. I concure to what the others have said...30 bucks is a good price.
 
There is a Utah guru at AA by the handle DavidLD.
I have a pair of WD-90, 12-inch, 3-way, and they are a very easy pair of speakers for listening.
$30 or $40 wouldn't be bad for an audition.

Not sure yet what I`ll do. May see what low dollar is for the pair. Maybe listen to them.
