The 886A should not have foam surrounds on the tweeter, so sniperdolan probably did not have original tweeters. They use a 2.5-inch CTS phenolic ring tweeter; Pioneer made new tweeters for these (or very similar ones) up until just a couple of years ago; they may yet still.
Sound-wise, they should be pretty neutral. Not overly warm like Advents, but not as cool sounding or as brilliant sounding as other west-coast speakers. Call it a "mid-west" sound, if you like. They are a bookshelf speaker, and are meant to perform in a horizontal orientation, but being that they use a cone tweeter, they will probably work well as small floor speakers or stand speakers in a vertical orientation.
I have the big-brother Altec 890C (single 406-8Y woofer, a 406-8Y sans motor for the ABR, and a CTS horn) , and they are the only speaker to have stayed consistently in my lineup for a year. That should say a lot unto itself. They go plenty loud with modest (30-60 watts) power.
For $20, you cannot go wrong with any working Altec. Tweeters (OEM CTS or Pioneer units) are readily available, and the woofers are fairly bullet proof if you keep within their specified power limits. Change out the x-over caps if you are so inclined, but you may find thry sound just fine with no modification at all.
