Fisher face color

I have a Fisher FM-200B that had missing lettering on the face. It was the lighter colored "champagne" face. I found a nice "gold" face for it but wanted the original to match the amplifier.

I have a friend who is very skilled with metal and graphics. He has a CNC machine as well as a laser and I asked him if he could make a copy of my FM-200B face. A short time later he had a very nice copy, using the CNC for the aluminum and the laser for printing the graphics. The face in the photo is just a sample to see if it fits, and that everything lines up, which it does. He says the finished face would have no scratches and the graphics would be perfect as he uses a different graphics program for the finished product.
He can easily make any Fisher face if he has an original to scan the cutouts.

The second photo shows the 2 different colors of the originals.

My problem now is the finish. The darker "gold" face looks to be a tinted laquer as they can be completely removed with laquer thinner. The "champagne" face looks to be possibly anodized? Does anyone know what was used on the lighter face plates?

If anodized, I'll drop one off that is finished, as well as one without lettering to see what looks better when completed.

IIRC The brushed aluminum faced units like your 200B had an anodized finish on it.

I was thinking that, as it is finished on the rear as well but I thought I'd better ask the experts here :yes:
 
Thanks. I'll post photos of them when finished if I find the correct or very close color. If this was a test I can't wait to get a finished one as it looks pretty good.

Looks great! I have a dozen+ Fisher receivers and other components and the champagne color is all over the spectrum -of course I'm too scared to clean really aggressively, so it may just be cigarette smoke staining some darker than others.

The original font for the face plates on most Fishers of this era is Futura light. I was able to load it in SolidWorks and make a really good model of a faceplate on a slow day at work. If your friend has an engraving machine, I could probably help get a model with the correct font set up so the lettering could be engraved rather than printed. Another option is a proper screen printing endeavor -actually probably more difficult than engraving.

Yes he does have an engraving machine. He makes some incredible engravings on all types of materials. I think he used his laser engraver to somehow print the lettering. I know lacquer thinner does absolutely nothing to them! He told me the lettering would have to be sanded off and they look just like silkscreened paint to me.

Another thing he mentioned is the cutouts would be perfect for the small radius of some face plates if he uses a water jet machine. He is very picky and detailed on his projects.

When finished I'm having him make a new X-202B face for me. He's already scanned it. I'll get them both anodized the same so they will be a perfect match.
 
Think he would do a faceplate for hire? I have an 800C without a faceplate. Been looking on the bay for 6 months with no luck.

Yes I know he would. Let me get the anodizing down and I'm sure he would make one for you.
