Just got a sweet little Eico HF14A mono amp. Factory built, and not a scratch on it! :thmbsp:

Sounds nice as is, but unfortunately the original Eico (Mullard) tubes didn't come with. :grumpy: Instead, there's a hodgepodge of decent old school this and that, but I figure to at least replace the power tubes with a matched set. Prices of NOS of the "premium" audiophile grade tubes is redonkulous, so looking into new production.

EL84/6BQ5/7189

Some I've found that look interesting - all prices are for a matched pair:

- The new TungSol 6BQ5 is supposed to be reliably bulletproof with good tone. Price is nice, at around $35.

- TAD EL84STR ... these are supposed to be equivalent to a 7189 for durability and strength. Haven't seen a lot about them, but I've got some TADs here (KT88 and 12AU7) that sound real good and are built heavy. $40

- Reflektor 6N14N-EP. The 1990ish production is supposed to be quite nice. Also military grade and long life, and also around $40.

- I also found some Psvane EL84T that are supposed to be a "treasure" version of the Shuguang production tube. Haven't heard much about those, but I really liked their KT88's before wearing them out. Kinda pricey compared to the other offerings though, at $75.

* Some confusion as to what the amp is rated at - most say 12 watt, but it's got 18 watt printed right on the faceplate. I expect that's a good range from a push/pull pair of your basic EL84's compared to what you can push out of some heavy duty 7189's or equivalent.

12AX7

Haven't a clue ... never worked with them. I don't believe they need to be matched in this amp. Only concern I've found is that the amp needs a really low noise tube in the pre driver, and a spiral filament is HIGHLY recommended for that. Looks like the Sovtek 12AX7LPS fits the bill, and is a real deal at less than $15. Not sure if getting all three the same is the way to go, or use different tubes in the driver stage for tone. I plan to use the amp to provide power for a center channel speaker, so I assUme something that would handle vocals well would be the primary concern.

It's working and sounds good now, and I figure it's also got some bench time coming as it's pretty much a virgin except for the tubes. So, take your time ... no big rush ... (tap tap tap) :D

The Reflektors are good sounding tubes and built like a tank. Also for about 90% of the sound quality Sovtek EL84M's are good too. TADs are better for guitar I think.

In new production 12AX7, the reissue Mullard beats the LPS in midrange vocals, I think. The Sovtek LPS has great bass extension though.

Ha, I agree 100% with this post, spot on.

Good beans ... I was kinda leaning towards the TAD EL84's, but as mentioned, they seem to cater more to the pickers ...

I also found a nice pair of NOS Sylvania's that look like a good deal at $60. I've got a few Sylvania tubes (12AU7 and 2C51) that I really really like the tone of. These would be circa '60's ...

Also noted on the Mullard 12AX7's ... Hadn't heard much on those, other than the whole lineup is getting decent enough reviews.

Keep em comin' !!

PS ... one thing I'm finding re: the Russian tubes is that there's apparently some confusion when it comes to translating the Cyrillic markings. Fer instance, looks like Reflektor 6N14N-EP could be interepreted any number of ways.

For preamp tubes in my guitar amps I love the Groove Tubes version of the Sovtek 12AX7LPS (GT-12AX7-R2) and the Groove Tubes version of the JJ ECC83S (GT-ECC83-S).

"brighter tone, lively and responsive"

Sounds like just the ticket for a center channel ... bookmarked!

Also looks like they have a few varieties available depending on your preference.

I'm assUming the R2 would be the way to go for this application. Although the R3 "high gain" might give me a bit more punch. Maybe a nice touch with a set of heavy duty 7189 equivalents ... maybe not so much with less durable power tubes.

Hmmmmmmmm ...

Ski could you pleas post a pics of the insides with an underskirt also!

I have HF-12's and think they are basically the same if I remember from reading? The one in your picture says HF-12A.

I have been using JJ output tubes and they are quite good for the $ , but as mentioned some NOS may be nicer and they sure have gone up in price.

There are GL EL84 & preamp 12AU7/12AX7 reissues out there for more than the TS , and Jim McShane sells them saying on his site how nice they are.

I used them for a long time on my Heathkit SA-2. They are the best EL84 I used, and I used EI, JJ, and EL84M. I highly recommend TAD EL84STR, it is an M on steroids, everything (imaging, bass, dynamics, soundstage, etc.) improved with it. I purchased upon recommendation of the guys at The Tube Store; they nailed it with their recommendation. Don't know if Jim McShane sells them, but you can check also; he sold me my EH KT90's.

As for 12AX7, I used also a few from NOS to newer mfg. and the best one I had was Tung-Sol 12AX7, no issues at all.

OK then ... the TADs are either good or not ... <G>

They do do some serious QC before selecting them

(hee hee ... I said do do)

Still soaking it all in ...

Found this on da bay ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/leslie-tube...189-4-12AU7-tubes-all-usa-made-/221842090854?

Nice looking Leslie tube amp with 8 RCA 7189's and 4 RCA 12AU7's. With the current bid, it'd almost be worth it to get it just for the tubes, but that's bound to change.

** ShadowDog ... the HF12A is identical electronically to the HF12. Only differences is cosmetics. I've got it buttoned up in the rack right now, but I'll get a pic next time I get to gettin' on wit it ...

Thanks! No rush! I figured the guts were the same! Anyway they sure are nice and compact and easy to listen to.

Look for a Magnavox console and you will most likely find it has Mullard EL84s and 12AX7s in it. You could have the tubes and an amp to play with for $40.

I have used the Reflektor 6N14N-EP (in a Magnavox amp no less) and they are very good.

Compact is one of the things I was going for. Good sound is a nice bonus.

As is, kind of a tight fit in my "minimalist" system ... there's maybe an inch either side, and the entire case except for the faceplate is mesh with an open back for ventilation for anyone wondering about the DAC parked on top. That's also tube, so I wanted to keep it high. Fairly tall legs on that as well, so no concerns here. Just listened to Brothers In Arms and the case was barely warm.

One casualty was the Vibrapods that were supporting the ST120 tuber. Those are quite large and there just wasn't enough room any more. Have to look into another option there as there is quite a bit of vibration transmitted from the rack. No microphonics, but I'd prefer to calm things down a bit if I can.

PS ... the Eico is feeding the Bose VS100 located directly underneath.

I use these under my ST-35:

In my ST-35 I use Sovtek EL84. They replaced Mullards. Not much difference in sound. Very pleased.

Kewl!

Be interesting to see what the crush strength on those pads would be. At that price, a cheap enough option to try.

PS ... not to completely derail the thread, but one of the reasons the amp is as compact as it is, the taller tubes are mounted diagonally ... kind of an interesting ... twist ... The power tubes between the iron, the rectifier (EZ81 ... Mullard!) on the side.

Well, they're intended to sit under boilers and furnaces, so I would imagine an amp wouldn't bother them.
