I’ve spent the better part of today listening to music on a new-for-me pair of speakers and trying to figure out how to post some questions about them without coming across as a snob. You see, these speakers are very uncommon at fewer than thirty made according to the previous owner. When it comes to unobtanium components, far too many audiophiles are guilty of proclaiming such gear to be the greatest ever secure in the unlikelihood of someone else being able to pick up a like item and dispute the claim. To call the resultant attitude snobbish is putting it lightly, yet such persons persist to the point of shipping one of a kind speakers and such across the oceans just to establish themselves in this position. I don’t want to be like that or even perceived as such, but it can’t be helped, so here it goes ….

Yesterday, I undertook a 530 mile round trip down to Kelly’s (kfa888) place where he was holding a pair of large speakers he picked up for me (Thanks again) the other day. Of course, it was a bit of a haul, but necessary to free up his white van for other speaker sales. Fortunately, I managed to spend nearly half of the trip in conversation with some hitchhiking audio bum I picked up near Graham. The visit there made for some great comparisons between many East Coast sound speakers including the KLH 1 (far better than I was expecting). I also managed to watch our host set a new record for destruction of foam surrounds – a pair of EPIs that lasted me for two years started blowing foam chunks before a song was halfway through. Fun time overall, but long story short, I’m now the proud new owner of a pair of modified Flatline Design Model 175 hybrid ribbon speakers as designed and built by Lewis Muratori. When I first saw these listed for sale, my curiosity was immediately arrested and I knew that at the very least I had to give them a listen. Fortunately, things worked out for the better and now I have my best speakers ever (being that my Sound Labs and their $1800-2000 repair estimate have now been put onto indefinite hold).

The Model 175 takes it’s designator from the 175cm long true ribbon hung on the side of the 6’ tall cabinet. This ribbon runs from 350Hz to ~45kHz according to Russell Novak’s second Stereophile review of the speakers of which I have a very poor fax copy of. For the rest, a 5” Peerless 146MR2608 polycone driver serving midbass duty from 100Hz to 350Hz with the idea being a smaller cone in an acoustic suspension design could serve as a sufficient intermediary driver between the ribbon and woofer. The 10” woofer, unmarked and thus unidentifiable to me, is actually side mounted firing out between the speaker towers and uses the majority of the main tower as it’s cabinet. Overall construction is pretty good, but modifications have made it even better with ~5/8” front and inside panels and ~1 5/8” for the outside side and rear thanks to the addition of `” MDF. The inside is braced in several different ways and all inside panels are covered in dynamat. The crossover is mounted on a MDF tray in its own chamber at the bottom with a black plexiglass connection plate so that the whole crossover may be readily pulled out for modification. While the former Cherry finish has been painted white (I don’t mind), and the MDF modification has made for rather unstable towers due to off-center weight, the quality does seem consistent with the $4700 price tag around 1990.

Now, on to my questions and request for help …

Beyond what I’ve written above, I pretty much know nothing about these speakers and would appreciate any and all information any of you may have. Even some information about Lewis Muratori’s other designs would be appreciated.

Preliminary listening indicates that there may be a problem with the crossover due to the brightness of the ribbon and disconnectedness of the cone woofers. Early on, I encountered the symptoms of sporadic shorting of one unit, which I discovered to be due to a stray wire and tool (heatsink clamp from soldering upgrades sometime in the past, I suspect) in the crossover. The whole arrangement caught me as appearing a bit off, once the surprise at just how large a Solens 100 µF polypropylene capacitor really is. I took advantage of the opportunity to draw up a schematic of the crossovers and the result just doesn’t look right to me.

This is my schematic with the parts list below; I haven’t an original to compare to and some fairly extensive modifications have been made to these. The woofer and midbass share the same connectors. The inductors have no markings on them to indicate their values:

While these speakers are being discussed, does anyone have any good suggestions for possible upgrades to the cone drivers? The midbass needs the greatest attention, I believe and as the previous owner suggested should be upgraded. Also, despite the relatively large cabinets, the woofers roll off by 40Hz. I’d like to investigate ways to improve the bass while maintaining the tight/fast sound the Flatlines already have.

Right now, these will become my main speakers. Though sensitive to equipment, they are very good. The ribbons bring the strengths of dipolar line array sound, which I’ve always been very fond off, along with even better transparency than my Tannoys were ever capable of. The phrase is a tired old one, but true, I’m hearing things I’ve never heard before in my music including faint background choruses in some songs I did not know were there. The presentation has that Maggie magic that first brought me into this hobby, but is much more revealing of equipment, so I have much work to do there as well. The imaging is currently not as fine as with my Tannoys, but is more three-dimensional and realistic. It is very likely that room treatments (a must for dipoles) will really help this out now that I’ve changed my listening around just for these speakers and can now do treatments. Oh yes, these speakers have made me very happy and have opened a whole new avenue for improvement to my system.

Aesthetically, that is a REALLY cool design. Not sure about the combination of line source highs and point source mids, but i suppose it could work out at the right distance/height.

Cant wait to hear your thoughts.

Fear not, my friend; :no: I´m much more of a snob than you are. I´m pretty sure there´s no other pair of speakers like mine in the whole world. :D

Now, regarding your new speakers. Pitty I know absolutely nothing about them. Those look absolutely gorgeous. I sure hope you can straighten them out.

Maybe then you´ll be willing unload your Tannoys for cheap on this poor fellow at the other side of the Atlantic? :scratch2:

As far as suggestions go, I'd recommend listening to them at different distances. The ribbon, as a line source is not going to roll off as quickly as a point source, so as you move further away, the mid will drop by 6db with every doubling of distance and the ribbon at 3db. you might find that at some point, the mids snap into focus based purely on them playing at the same level.

The resonance in the ribbon you are hearing is typical for long ribbons and was probably attempted to be corrected by the second portion of the crossover.
 
Thanks all for the responses. Judging by y'alls' opinions, I'm surprised that it took these speakers about three weeks to sell. I was getting to think that I was the only one irresistibly intrigued by these.

You've nailed the issue with that. When I go as far away from these speakers as I can in my apartment, the drop in level for the ribbon is nearly imperceptible. Whereas the midbass is significantly reduced. With my face just a few inches away from those two drivers, the sound level sounds right, but in my listening spot, it thins out significantly. I think I'm going to do some fool's biamping today (full-range signal from two amps relying on the passive in the speakers to do the crossing) and see if I can't bump up the midbass some to correct for this.

The nice thing about these Flatlines is that it just about doesn't matter whether I'm sitting or standing, the sound is consistent. The dipole radiation pattern also makes for a very stable soundstage where the instrument positions don't change much even when I'm outside the speakers all-together. The current sweetspot (before room treatments) is the whole apartment. :thmbsp:

How do you mean? You see, this crossover doesn't gel with what I know about crossovers being that it appears at first to be a second order with the parts, but fails to make the connections needed to work that way. I checked, double checked, and triple checked that schematic of mine and that is how the crossovers are wired up.

You're not alone in knowing absolutely nothing about them. I just about qualify for that classification as well and I own them! I must admit, though, that they do have good lines. Now, as to the Tannoys, you can have them for what I paid for them ($40/pr) if you pick them up. :thmbsp: *

btw, i see a first order crossover on the ribbon, based on the schematics you drew up. That is the first component, The second group of components is a series notch filter to tame the resonances around the crossover freq.


Actually, after checking again, thats not a series notch filter, but a parallel notch filter in series...lol

Yeah, that's a simple one thanks to the cap. Yet, the cone drivers have a 12dB lowpass. Still, doesn't the midbass look like it's running free for as low as it can go (Fs: 54Hz for this Peerless) whereas the woofer runs up to 100Hz? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me unless Muratori figured that those ~50Hz would be reduced due to the side-firing nature of the woofer. I guess I'm more curious as to just what the stuff in the middle is supposed to do, such as the second cap and inductor on the ribbon and the like with the other drivers.

Maybe it has a natural 12 db rolloff at the lowend that coincides with the low pass of the woofer, or the overlap is intentional?

Dingus thanks a bunch for the ADS (730) they sound simply awesome with the SX-1010 and set up right. I listened to them for hours last night and fell in love with the ADS sound all over again.

Damage, you're mostly right. The Flatlines are not full-range true ribbons as the ribbon driver is hybridized with the conventional cone drivers. However, the ribbon hung on the side is a True Ribbon. When a flashlight is used to peer through the grill cloth, the ribbon looks just like the tweeters in your link, only it's over 5 and half feet long. It does not use a transformer as the ribbon is long enough to create sufficient resistance to go without the step-up transformer. Ribbons solely on the resistance of the ribbon metal, but most ribbons are small tweeter types like yours and so there just isn't enough there to measure sufficient resistance for an amp to drive. Those tweeters would present a near short without the transformer and so it steps up their fraction of an ohm resistance to a tolerable 4 ohms or so for the transformer, much like a tube amp's output transformer (very basically, steps up the speaker's low impedance to the several kilo-ohms the output tubes need to see.) Unfortunately, despite their size, the ribbons on my Flatlines still measure a DCR of ~1.3 ohms, which is why I am not trying my tube amp out on them.

Now as to the various types of planar drivers manufacturers like to claim are ribbons, I briefly described the differences here. Your Carvers don't have a ribbon driver despite the claims floating around the internet. I've seen and heard a pair of Amazings in person and that planar element is a regular planar-magnetic driver such that Magnepan uses and Apogee violated patent law to use for their bass panels and many of their lower end tweeter elements (only the biggest models used a true ribbon and that only for the tweeter). The reason why it may be called a ribbon is because the voice coil trace is etched out of a metalized coating on the Mylar diaphragm, though at best this is a quasi-ribbon so long as it's only attached at the short ends. Sorry, but the various inaccurate marketing claims made over the years applying the "ribbon" designation to standard planar-magnetic drivers has come to frustrate me. That's not to say that planar-magnetics and quasi-ribbons aren't excellent drivers -- it was Magnepans that brought me into this hobby -- it's just that they're not on par with true ribbons. Not to say that non-foil ribbons don't have the advantage of being much more robust in terms of max SPL and power handling.
