Marantz 2230 broken power button

I've got a Marantz 2230 that's been working fine for a year, but the power button has just given out. It no longer stays depressed, so the unit won't stay on. Is this something I should attempt to fix myself, with a new cap or something? I'm not afraid of seeing the inside of my stereo, but I would never forgive myself for breaking it.

On the other hand, the Klipsch KG4s I bought from a member here have given me nothing but joy...

I just just looked at the 2230 I have nude. The switch most likely has a metal piece in it that moves back and forth as you push the button. You may be able to do surgery on the switch and see if it is gummed up or a piece came out of place or broke. You would have to remove the cover, face plate, and maybe the bottom. All easy. See pic. It's the thing with the orange and yellow wires.

These switches for power on and off, dial lights, are the bane of a otherwise beautiful design, I have two 2270's, and have bought a supply of 4 power switches, I push them in very carefully, hoping thats the way uhhuh uhhuh they like it!! There is always a weak link, help is right here, somewhere? Peace Craig
 
Suitable replacement switches can be had from E-Switch, which Digikey carries. If there's a saftey cap on the switch, it needs to be replaced also.
 
This problem seems to be fairly common. This is the reason that I do not use the power switch on my 2230 -- I plug it into a power strip and turn it on/off using that. Hopefully I can avoid the problem alltogether.

Hello radiopoet, sometimes it is not the switch, but there is a plastic bushing glued to the faceplate. If this bushing comes loose it will obstruct the rod of the power switch.
Simply remove the hood of your 2230 and look between chassis and faceplate from the right side

I agree with that 100% -- and for me I could use it as intended (the power switch is not broken), and have used it that way in the past. But because of the risk it just doesn't make much sense. Using a power strip, you can still walk up, hit a power button, and listen. And there will be no risk that the power button will crap out and I'll have to be without the receiver for awhile so I can either fix it myself or have someone else fix it (if it is beyond my capabilities, which is likely). I understand that others might feel differently, but for me it makes the most sense.
