Here's one of four horn cabs I made to stack on some 15" PA cabs, Crate PE15H, I have for my current PA system.
The small horn tweeter (P*Audio PHT-408) in the cabs is somewhat harsh so I wanted a smoother horn and driver. I chose the CTS KSN-1196 5" x 15" horn lens and CTS KSN-1188a piezo driver. This is the large "PowerLine" model that has a protection circuit to 400 watts and goes down to 800 hz.
Actually it goes lower, down to about 600 hz, but is cleaner if crossed higher at 800hz-900hz. I placed a resistor in parallel with the 1188a so that it acts like a regular driver, and in series with that is a capacitor so that it rolls in at about 850 hz at 6 db/oct.
There is also an inductor and capacitor, forming a 12db/oct low pass going to a "woofer out" socket on back. This horn box is stacked on top of my fullrange cab, and a 3' jumper run down to it. Since 850 hz is far below the crossover to the cab's built in tweeter, that harsh tweeter is out of the picture. And the woofer is rolled off at a frequency more suitable to a 15" woofer.
The result is a much cleaner, more relaxed and natural, near hi-fi sound. Yet the horn can be left at home and the cab only used as a full range if necessary.
I used the same black Ozite carpet that the manufacturer used on the full range cab. I changed the Crate's corner protectors over to the "Chevron" locking type from Rean. Everything stacks and interlocks well, and looks like it was made to go together. Unseen, there is a strap type handle on the other side of the horn box, like those used on guitar amps.
This is just the most recent project. It resulted in a much smoother PA system that is still small and easy to move around, quick and easy to set up. There are four of those 15" cabs and four horn boxes to stack on them. This means the amp is running into 2 ohms, which it handles easily... and was designed to do so.
Next on my workbench, my older son, overseas right now (Army), has me building a pair of 7pi-18 kit's from
www.pispeakers.com. These are three-way all horn systems. The bass section is a corner horn with Eminence Kilomax-18. Yes, 18" woofer... MORE POWER!!! Tim Taylor would be proud. The mid is a wood horn driven by an Eminence Delta-10. The tweeter horn is the Eminence PSD-2002 driving their H290 horn lens, a very fine combo.
When I finish those, I'll get around to replacing my old Speakerlabs with some 4pi Theatre's from Pi Speakers. These have the same Eminence PSD-2002 and H290 for the top end, and Delta-15's in 7 cft ported boxes for the bass.
I'll be taking pictures of all this and doing step by step threads.
