My old (new) turntable!

Nostalgia. My parents bought one of those Radio Shack "Good, Better, Best" stereo systems back in 1971. They got the "Best" I think: STA-65b receiver, RS 999 rtr, Optimus 1 speakers, and a Realistic/Miracord 40A turntable.

Craigslist had a pair of beat up Optimus 1s and a Miracord 40A left over from a garage sale this morning for $50. I didn't hesitate.

Ah, the Miracord

My first "serious" turntable was a Miracord 10h. It sure brings back memories!

BTW, is that a Radio Shack receiver behind the TT in your photo? ;-)

I saw that this morning. Your picture looks a lot better than the one on CL.

Nice,

Dan

The turntable looks better in person (dustcover is pretty opaque and cracked), but the speakers (which first caught my eye) are just trash. Tweets had been changed out with some that didn't even BEGIN to fit the opening. Veneer is coming off all around the bottom (large pieces missing), Cabinet corner coming loose. I'll pull the nice woofers and midranges, and put the rest on the curb.

RS-4100, or something like that. ;)

Interesting TT (oh and like previously mentioned, nice Realistic receiver the behind the TT).

How does the TT sound? Is it a rumble machine? I've always been curious about 'em.

Cheers

PS. I sent out that letter in the mail for you today :thmbsp:

Pm, that's a great piece of kit! Congrats!

BTW, smoke them stogies yet? I know you drank all the beer... :D :smoke:

Paul,

Yep. While SWMBO was spending two weeks in Austin caring for new baby and new momma, I got a chance to sit on the front porch and blow smoke at mosquitos!

Very enjoyable. Thanks a million!

BTW: here's the son-in-law playing guitar for his baby daughter!

It's an idler wheel unit (like Dual/Garrard/etc.), but I don't remember it having a lot of rumble in the old days (listening through my folks headphones). I need to get a new stylus (this one's bent), or a new cartridge (with 78 option) before I do much listening to it.

I played a couple of old LPs on it, and it sounded pretty good (wanky stylus and all). It's got a Shure/Realistic R27E on it, and the diamond looks perfect, darn shame they bent the cantilever.

Mounted a new Shure de Mexico M92E on her. She sounds real nice.

Not for critical listening (that's the Thoren's job), but for smiles and warm-fuzzies, she does real good! :thmbsp:

Now I can get an N78 stylus for some of those old 78s I have in storage.

I like the M-92 series. The Mexican Shures are nice since they have that added spice to the sound.

Cheers
