Dead Marantz 2600 on the 'Bay - anyone here a gambler???

I'm sure it can be brought back for a hell of a lot less than it can be sold for in just plain working condition but. . . Who ever gets it better know how to do it himself or have a damn good plan and a trusted fixer on his payroll. . .

Lots of "Picking and Grinning" to be done here. . . I'd like to know what has already been done in an effort to get her running. . . If some jack legg had it then I agree it could get crazy. . .
 
I'm sorely tempted - never owned a 2600 before - but my guess is that it'll go for at least $2K, and if the tranny is dead (and it probably is, otherwise he'd fix it for $400 and sell it for $3,900), I'd be well and truly up Soundesign Creek without a paddle...

The problem is not so much in finding a competent tech, but in finding a replacement power transformer, if indeed that is the problem. The transformer is unique, no longer made, and the only way to get one would be to gut another Marantz 2600. The buyer could very easily be stuck with an essentially unrepairable $2,000 albatross.
 
You really have to wonder if the seller knows it's the transformer and isn't saying - quite the gamble, and the seller only has a minimum amount of feedback.
 
That unit exhibits the same symtoms as the dead 2500 that is sitting on a shelf out in my repair shop. I tested it, and the transformer is burned out, turn to turn short. Anyone know of a good x-former re-winder?
 
I'm sure I'm out to lunch here, but don't places make custom X-formers. Doesn't Mac still wind em all in house?

I was quoted $1000/ea to have my trannys rebuilt by an outfit in Illinois. Too rich for my blood.
 
I am sure the Seller has already done EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to get that 2600 repaired and been told "it's hopeless" without a new Tranny. When I used to sell 2600s new, this is the way they'd look with a Tranny failure.

Since the Tranny is the most irreplaceable part of the 2600, gutting another 2600 with a working Tranny to repair this one makes no sense.

However, for someone with a 2600 this could make a nice parts unit. Strip what you need and pass it on. They are always people who will pay lots of money for one regardless. :D

I wouldn't say that necessarily. . .I've seen too many backyard mechanics that think they know it all not even ask for help. I knew one that gave away a 3000.00 sattelite receiver (C-Band) because a cat stepped on the mute button. . .He wouldn't listen, thought he knew it all and was going to the dump when another quiet type friend said he'd take it for parts. . .I think he still uses it today.
