I am just dropping in to say hello, since I just bought my first real system. It goes something like this, a Marantz 1038B receaver, Carver 1.5T amp, and a pair of out standing SpeakerLab Supper Seven's. You know the ones with the leaf tweeter. I saw them on ebay and just had to snap them up. I have grown so used to my dads units that I needed my own. So at current count we have 2 sets of SpeakerLab K-Horns, 1 set of 3', and now my Super Seven's. Now if anyone on here has the chance to snap up a set of Super 7's, do it, they go lower than the K's and the mids and highs are not harsh like the horns. Just remember SpeakerLab stuff loves power lots of power.:banana:




Who else on here has SpeakerLab speakers?

Wasn't a big fan of the cabinet designs, but the components SpeakerLab used were beyond reproach. Good stuff. EV horn tweeters and mids, Audax/Polydax cone mids (the very nice 12P25FSM), and some very nice in-house-built woofers.

I found a pair of trashed Speakerlab 7s, (cabinets beat, crossovers fried beyond repair (ie, FIRE), parts missing, etc), and still use the W1208R woofers out of them, in a pair of passive-radiator subs (5 cubic feet boxes, with the Speakerlab W1208R and a custom-built 15" passive radiator in each box). The nice thing about the W1208R, is its MASSIVE Xmax, at least for the day... 10mm in each direction! Dang things are OUTRAGEOUSLY powerful in the PR cabinets... bass down to 23 Hz (!), and capable of 115dB plus, in a 24x45 foot hotel ballroom... on a 50w/ch Rotel amp!!

I'm thinking of replacing the amp, with something closer to 125w/ch. If loud is good, LOUDER is BETTER! :D :D :D Probably can get close to 120dB out of them, before they bottom out (according to the sims I ran when I built the sub cabinets)...

somtimes, i drive by speakerlab factory here in seattle on my way to work and wonder what they're up to these days. i heard they do mostly custom and in-wall stuff. i also wonder, only if they had offered little better looking cabs, how much more popular they still might be. ....but then, they're from seattle, the home of underground, alternative, grunge music, and most people here don't give much **** about what they wear and look like either. :D
 
I am an old Speakelab fan too. I still have some of their tech papers and color brochures from the 70's. I have had the Super 7's and 6's. I think I still have a pair of their flat horn tweeters somewhere

Well then you would have the first gen european style capri. I also have a 8 driver system drawn up for my capri using home componits.


And for the record, speakerlab is going to be bring back some of the old kits, that they can still get drivers for, like the .1's 3's, and so on. K-horn plan can be obtained from them as well. Also the have an old timer back with them, I belive her name in Ann.:thmbsp:

I have an old set of Speakerlab S30's that I have had mated to my Pioneer SX-1980 back in my college days (1980's). The Speakerlabs have been shelved for the past 20 years, they are in need of new midranges, tweeters and re-foaming of woofers. The Speakerlab 3's have an increadable low end.

More recently I have been using my Dynaco ST70 with my Klipsch Fortes. I am in love with the efficiency of the Klipsch Fortes mated with the tube amp.

I appreciate your find on the super 7's. I would be tempted to pick up a pair if they were reasonable priced.

How did they sound?



Has anyone on here ever herd a set of Delta hybrids type 5's played, did they sound good, or just ok?




Anyone else noticed that Speakerlab speakers sound better and better with every time you step up in amp size? When I use just my Marantz 2238B the 7's sound good, but with 200+ carver watts I am able to make out the people draging there fingers across the strings on the guitars, and so on.


Also I see the horn style supper sevens on ebay alot for 300-400 bucks, does anyone want a heads up when there up?
 
Those are the Speakerlab 30's. The sound, as I remember, had depth and clarity. The most impressive was the Nestorovic woofer system which accurately reproduced the low end not in a boomy fashion but with authority only when there was low frequencies in the recording.

They also handled 350WPC which was a good match for my Pioneer SX1980. The efficiency rating wasn't bad at 91dB but doesn't compare to my Klipsch Forte's at 98dB.

I also noticed that they sounded better with the volume up but then again so does my Pioneer SX1980.

I my younger days I enjoyed building Speakerlab kits, besides my S30's I also have a pair of S.1's which are a very small bookshelf speaker.

This is an old thread but I thought I would respond.

I have a pair of S 30's, DAS 7's and DAS 8's. Unsing Heathkit AA-1800s to provide power. I also have a pair of BG RD75 ribbons which came out after the Speakerlab Auricles and when Dave Graebner left SLab to start his own company.

With that said, does anyone happen to have a pair of 10" woofers that where used on the S 30's and S 40's? They are model # W1038P. I'll take then in any condition as long as they can be repaired.

Yes, an old thread, but ... I just picked up a pair of Speakerlab 3's at a local yard sale. I'll admit to knowing almost nothing about speakers compared to some of you, and I wasn't even looking for speakers, but with the price at $10 for a pair of what looked like nice real wood cabinets and sturdy craftsmanship in and out, I couldn't leave without them (although they barely fit into my Hyundai Tiburon). Anyway, I am just wondering what, if anything, I should know about these things. And did I get a steal at $10, or is that more than what they're worth?

It has been said before, but why not beat a dead horse? I am a big SL fan and currently listen to .1 satellites (1978) with the twin 10-inch passive sub running off a Hafler DH 200 amp as well as a pair of DAS 3s (1984) running from a Kenwood KA-3500. My son in college has my S11 satellites (early '80s) with a home-built powered sub. TLC, some recapping - these things will last a long time and they DO like power.

Let your ears be the judge: throw a big amplifier at them...how do they sound? :music:

I have a pair of Speakerlab 3's and like them alot - the 12" W1208R woofers in those 3's alone are worth multiples of what you paid. See what GordonW said earlier in the thread. Here's some text from the 1977 catalog:

The S3 uses the W1208R, which possesses the characteristics desireable in the optimum bass driver, including a large diameter, high-power voice coil with an unusually large amount of "overhang". This allows extremely long cone travel for reproducing very low bass frequencies at high volume.

Thanks, guys. Yes, I have them hooked up to my Technics receiver (I am not home and don't recall the model #) and so far they sound great. I have had the same pair of Bose 201's since the early-mid '90s, and these old Speakerlab giants are a breath of fresh (albeit vintage) air.

I agree about the cabinet design, I have 7s and would like them better if they were a tower instead of a short, squat box.
They definitely do bass with authority, they're the only speakers I have that even come close (but not quite there) to my AR9s for bass.
 
The most impressive bass ever heard in Susurus-land-o-speakers is the 7's hooked up to the SAE A205 amp (was a Mystery Amp).

Better than the pair of powered 400w 10" closed-box subs in my old Klipsch RP-3's in LFE mode. :hdphones:

Is it harder to brace/reinforce a tall deep HT-style cab than the more conventional Fibonnacci box? Or is the internal volume the only thing that matters?

Yeah I know Madisound has that outdated-version book for a great price but I haven't sent for it yet.:(
 
New super Sevens

Hey,I just got back my mid drivers from the super seven I bought off craigslist.
I had Speakerlab rebuild the 61/4 drivers, and I had to buy one new 10" driver.

I'm really excited to check them out!

I also own a pair of DAS 3's I run with a B&W 600 sub to great effect,they have yet to be knocked off their stand by another speaker,and I have spent some money doing so. They rock out pretty good.

So far I will have about $220.00 into them. If I don't like them, I can sell them for what I got into it,I'm sure.

Speakerlab said they are coming out with a new line in around three months,it will be a feeling out time for them and if demand is there,they will start producing more. I wish them all the best and most likley will buy something from them.

BTW they have a 1/2 OFF sale right now on all the Arcam stuff!

Well they got here yesterday. The Speakerlab 3's with the dome tweeter.

First impression, wow. Good dispersion and sparkle! I've convinced I made the right decision to drive a bit far... :banana: Dome tweeter has a very different sound from the horns on the 7's. They need some volume to get them to shine... I can use these in rooms too small for the 7's. Mids are blue-ish, (not brown like the bare drivers I got).

These have a little of the ol' college town character... pushed in DCs (fixed :thmbsp:) the cig burn on top, and the little bit of glue on the woofer's DC that I imagine some EE student glued a mirror to and shined a laser on to watch the patterns dance on the ceiling! :banana:

However the eight speaker stand holes drilled through the bottoms need attention. They go right through--sorta defeats the purpose of enclosed A.S. cabs. :bash:

So to listen I put them on a hard flat surface, hoping to minimize the air loss. After a little Zep and Radar Love at window-rattling levels :D:music::D I noticed a curious phenomenon -- spooky moving speakers! :bat: :bat:

Seems air holes act like an Air Hockey table!
