Omron and Panasonic Relays at Digikey

Despite the purchaser at Digikey saying that he'd email me when they were available, he did not. Regardless, Digikey now stocks quantities of PC-mount relays (they have already carried the solder lug style for quite a while) . Here's some numbers:

These are by far the most common ones used in 70's Japanese gear, especially the MY4-02-DC24.

Note that the LY-type relays are not often used as speaker protection relays (but I think Yamaha does use them in some gear, as does the Sansui G-8000/G-9000), but they are often used in soft-start circuits in larger amps (and these usually are chassis mounted, not PC-mounted). Also note that, for quick identification, Omron has been used as the OEM relay for years, and many relays will say right on top of them 'MY4' or 'LY2'. At any rate, the LY-style relays have the coil pins spaced farther apart than the contact pins, and they are rotated 90° from the contact pins. The MY-style relays have the coil pins and the contact pins all lined up in a row.

FYI...don't screw around with pulling apart PC-mount relays to clean the contacts if you can get a new one. If these do not sell at a reasonable pace at Digikey, they will stop carrying them, so order-up.:yes:

Edit: Digikey now also carries Matsushita (Panasonic) relays, perfectly suitable to substitute for a few of the above Omron relays, as well as a couple that Digikey does not carry in the Omron brand. These are all 'MY'-style relays (except the HL2 DTDP 12V relay), with both the contact pins and the coil pins lined up in a row.

'Nother Edit: Digikey also carries a perfect replacement reed relay for the Kenwood 700C (Edit within the edit: A few 700c's use a shorting relay, and this will not work with those units). This is the US Relays DPDT 24V open-line relay, Digikey part number Z649-ND. The NC pins have to be cut off the new relay to fit the board, but other than that it is perfect. (You may note that the original relay in the 700C has a ground connection. This is simply a shield for the relay, and is not strictly needed. Note that if you do not clip the NC lead off that side of the relay, the contact will be shunted to ground. Do not allow this to happen...cut the NC leads off!)

I've always wondered if there were specific OEM relay models used for various Japanese and other gear.

Do you have any type of list for the specific relay for a specific unit or brand? It sure would be great if all the techy folks who have looked into their units (nudies) could identify the relay in their receiver/amp and then post collectively.

For example, I'd sure like to know the Marantz 22xx types and the 4300 relays. I agree that it would be a lot easier to desolder and replace the relay instead of trying to burnish the contact points, although I've done that with a decent degree of success.

Also, do you know of relays in preamps that can be replaced. Seems a lot of relays in preamps get corroded and the signal levels and currents are so low that they don't burn through the corrosion well.

Generally you only know after you look inside. I haven't exactly compiled a database, but if someone happens to know what those units have they are certainly welcome to chime in.
 
The relay prices from digikey are great. $7.40 for the MY4 relay is almost a giveaway price.

Someone should verify, but it looks like a MY4-02-DC24.

The 9090db takes an oddball MY3 relay.

I just popped the hood on my 2275 and molded into the clear plastic box is "Type MY2" and then printed in ink just under it is "02-Y4".

I assume I'm looking for Type MY2-02-Y4.

EW, do you know if the MY2-02-DC24 would be a drop-in replacement for this, or do I need to get an exact part match? I don't really know what all the numbers mean. I've messed around with trying to clean the contacts on this little box for too long! It would be awesome to solve this problem once and for all!:yes:
 
The only real question here is the coil voltage, and it ought to say right on top of the clear case. If not, I'm certain that it uses 24V, so the MY2-02-DC24 should be a direct replacement for it.
 
The voltage may be printed on the wrapper around the relay coil. Look through the side of the plastic case.

Thanks EW. That's good to know. On my Marantz 3650 pre amp, the relay sticks. When I power it up, the relay 'pop' through the speakers is there or at times it's not. I checked it on my oscilloscope while passing a signal to verify. It's an odd shaped, low profile relay. Signal, not current passes through.

Do the LY series tend to weld? The contacts are only rated for 24 VDC. Which ones seem to get used the most.
 
I reread EW's post and noted that the LY's are not used for speaker protection so the DC rating doesn't matter.
 
The biggest Sansui receivers use LY2 relays for speaker protection. Each channel has two, one for each speaker output. The G-33000 puts out 300WPC so Sansui had a lot of faith in those relays. They won't weld unless they are grossly overloaded.

In my Yamaha CR-2020 It has a relay with no manufacturer that I recognize anyway. The numbers on are as follows , TOPLINE; 7A 1/6 HP125.250vac
next line;3A30VDC, nextline;AP34219 nextline; HC2-P-DC12V then at the bottom 70330 Does that translate to the replacement being LY2-0-DC12?
 
How many pins does it have? A LY2 would likely have 8 pins.

The if the 3A30VDC refers to the contact rating, an MY2 relay would be fine.

Marantz 2325

What speakers protection relay does Marantz 2325 need?

After 5-10 min. of working my receiver makes a loud pop and sound goes out and in a second or so it comes on. I read in the forums that this is the simptom of a bad speaker relay.

If someone could suggest the corect model number for this unit I would greatly appreciate it.

What is the average price for the two power capacitors.

Any relay contacts will weld if there is to much established current flowing through the contacts when contacts are opened and closed.Contacts are rated for current load LY's are 4-15 amp @ 24volt.
