Realistic Electrostat 2's and 2a's..questions

There are 3 pairs of these locally where I'm at and I can get them for about $10 a pair ($5 on Friday night...lol). I have read thru the posts about these but any photos, etc are gone now. I know these aren't a sought after speaker overall but I keep thinking for no more than what they cost, why not get a pair and tinker. Could a person take all 3 pairs of panel sets out and make a line array with a better woofer? Has anyone ever done that? Could be a fun winter project, I guess. If they don't work out, I'm not out much money and I can always flip the tweeters. Any thoughts?

That was some good information. I appreciate that! It looks like I will just use that money and do something to fix some of the other projects I have going. I have receivers and amps to veneer, receivers and amps to recap, woofers to refoam, etc. I just keep adding things to the list! ha. Thank you guys for the information. Still, it's hard for me not to want to get one pair for $5 just to see what they sound like for the heck of it. Sheesh...this hobby (addiction)
 
Buy all 3 sets. You can likely get enough parts to make one good set as well as have spares. I bought a set at a yard sale years back. I did not expect much from them and sold them quickly for a SURPRISING amount of money. I had verified that they were working but had not really listened to them. The day I was packing them I decided to give them a whirl and was flabbergasted by how good they were. Had I done that prior I would not have sold them. I think they were II's.

For that short money I'd get all of them.

Someone gave me a near mint set last week and
after reading threads on them I wasn't expecting much either
but was pleasantly surprised.

The woofer was mediocre but I was thrilled with the mids & highs.
(I am easily amused though).

And they would make for an interesting future speaker project.

Only cautionary advice I have is they could lead to a thirst
for some more advanced units.

Cheaper than a Chinese buffet,go get them.

buy them, strip out the tweeters and corresponding parts, dump the rest. I'd love to get my hands on 3 pairs. I've always wanted to use the tweeters for a line array.
 
I've had 3 different pairs of the 2a's over the years. The 1st pair I wasn't impressed with and sold them. Then I got 2 more pair very cheaply last year and decided to try the line array. I honestly think you'd need at least 10 pair to make a line array that you could hear over the woofer. Maybe a recapping would help I dunno but I'm not going to try. I still have the line arrays of them free to a good home if anyone wants them.

I own a pair and they are nice sounding. The woofer is sluggish and not great. If you use the tweeters, which are also in the Realistic Electrostat 3 which is just a add on tweeter, however, they are really nice. I currently have a pair of the 3's running in my main system.

In other words, buy them now.
