What were the originals?
Does anyone know who made the original output transistors in the 2270? I don't feel like popping the top on my other Marantz units to look.

Afaik: Motorola, then Fairchild, later: Hitachi or Toshiba (with a red 'Marantz' stamp).

Hello,
perhaps you can buy MJ15003/MJ15004 or MJ15024/MJ15025 either Onsemi or NOS Motorolas these transistors are full ok with the 2270 and maybe better available in small quantities.

My 2270 has these Fairchild too, it is a late set of 1975! The 2275 -produced in 1977- works with the same transistors??
My question is: what are the differences in the discussed replacements -MJ15003/4, MJ 15024/5 and MJ 21195/6 ???? Not being a real expert, I can`t select the best by technical information, because there is no information about the original ones.
How can You get matched pairs??

Hello,
making transistors for high-power amps was hi-tec in the 70ies. The pnp type transistor, for complementary pairs was even more complicated - that's why early transistor amps had only npn transistors in the output stage (quasi-complementary design, mostly ac-coupled, output capacitor, one supply voltage)
The Marantz 2270 had complementary npn and pnp output devices, Motorola SJ2517/18 in the beginning. During its long production span, it got all the transistors that came in style over the years. Maybe Fairchild was cheaper and/or better than the old Motorolas.
Early 2270 had everthing made in Japan, transistors by Toshiba/Hitachi, circuit boards by ELNA, capacitors by ELNA except output transistors: Motorola, Texas Instruments, Fairchild. Looks to me Japan did not have the know How in the beginning?
As from a today's standpoint, don't bother to search for the number stamped on your 70ies transistor it is 99% obsolete. If you do get that device, it's probably a fake, or a modern chip with the old number stamped on it, or it is overpriced NOS....just my 2 €-cents

OOPS!!! MAKE SURE you have the flyback diodes across the emitter to collector on outputs. 1n4007, band to collector. This was deemed the cause for fairchild output device failure in the 70's and was an official Marantz service bulletin to warranty stations.
By the way , 2270 sn 3901 thru 4900 used sj2518-540442 -pnp
