ADS L810 upgrade speaker

The Acoustic Energy 500 series (the 509 or 520), IMHO, just about rule the 5k range, new. I've heard lots of speakers in that range, and they just do every aspect of sound reproduction as well or better than any of the others in that price range, that I've auditioned. They will be a major upgrade from any of the vintage ADS speakers, at least to my ears.

@BuzzK can also attest to how good the AE520s sound...

Regards,
Gordon.
Yes I can, thanks to Gordon. :-)

I love my ADS speakers, since 1977, and have a nice collection of them now, they just do music right. But they are not the last word in speakers, Canton, Vandersteen, Aerial, KEF, Focal, Wharfedale, etc. all make great sounding speakers, Finding the the one the makes "your" music magical is the one for you., considering budget, availability, fit, finish, you should be ab!e to find your forever speakers,

I would consider myself an ADS fan. L810 have been in the house for 35 years. Also others. L1230, L1290/2, L1590/2. I have a good notion of what I consider to be the ADS house sound. Aside from the excitement and joy we get from bringing in new contenders to challenge the old, I have some thoughts...

I have friends with decent kit. My impression compared to some more modern speakers is that the L810 don't lack bass, but they have a bit less impact. If that is the correct description. I don't want to say they have "muddy" bass, just that it is muddier.

With that said, I would step back and give full consideration to listening environment. There are no speakers that will deliver their best when the room and environment are at odds with them. I recognize there are always challenges with this and we can't always have our spaces perfectly tailored for optimal listening. If there is anything you can do with your room you will allow the L810 (or any speaker) to put up a fair fight.

In a nutshell, getting different speakers will almost certainly sound different. Are there things you can do to improve your listening space such that any speaker you choose will be put in its best possible light? It's not a novel idea and it is discussed on these boards. I believe a lot of us recognize this, but ultimately devote less effort into this area than is deserved.

I’ve had the 810’s, replaced by 910’s and those replaced by something else. The ADS line is nice in their own league but with $5k you can go “way” up the speaker food chain in the used market in my opinion. It’s just mostly patience and having an idea of what you want. As Blue Shadow said the world is your oyster. The Jbl 590s that I passed on to my son, very impressive for very low entry. Or the Jbl 4430s compared to the 810s aren’t in the same speaker universe, could be had for well less than $5k. I’ve driven my 4430s with just a 35W Harmon Kardon tube amp and they sound amazing.

After all the great comments I think I'm going to stay with the 810's for a while longer.
After buying a Wiim Ultra and the DSP it provides I'm really getting some
great sound out of the ADS L810's. Maybe work on the room too.

Thanks to all

My problem is I have not been exposed to too many speakers. I have not heard the speakers you are talking about, although I did look them up. My ADS 810 speakers are stored right now. I still think the are very good speakers. That is why I have not considered selling them. I just got into this hobby about three years ago so I am still feeling my way through. Plus I am on a somewhat limited budget. So when you say tops them easily. How would you describe the differences?
The BMR Towers would be a huge upgrade.

I love my 810’s and have enjoyed them for many years but I found a pair of Norman Model 9’s and I believe they beat out the 810’s. They will not be popular with the wife in most cases though.

Big votes for the BMR Philharmonic and Towers - if you want to try panels - Eminent Technology LFT-8c - rules the hybrid panel market under $12k, need a room at least 20x16 with a 2.5'+ behind and next to them.

Well I finally settled on an upgrade and bought some Aerial Acoustics t10 speakers to replace my L810's.
Very happy with them so far. Not sure I could have done any better for the price.
Comparison please, when you've gotten a good sense of them.

Don't know what made that one guy angry, but I've always wanted to hear a set of these. I think I'd be more pleased with them. Enjoy!
