B&W DM603 s2 torn tweeters question

Hi folks! New to the forum, from Norway.

Just bought a couple of cheap b&w dm603 s2 speakers, but both of them have torn tweeters (the aluminium "cover") . Check the pic.

I bought them along with a Denon AVR-3300 and I think the stereo sounds great. But shouldn't it sound bad and have a lack of treble ? Both of the speakers have "missing" tweeters (torn, not just dented.)

Also got to listen to a couple of Dali suite 2.8 with a nad amplifer c320bee and I didnt like that sound compared to the b&w's/denon.

How does the sound alter without the tweeters? And will it sound better with new tweeters? Why does it still sound so damn good?

Thank you for your answers audioholics!

Greetings from the North

Perhaps because the tweeters may still be radiating some energy, if the voice-coils are not damaged. If the tweeters are not functioning at all, the other drivers will still generate a good portion of the frequency range, until the tweeter crossover point is reached.

The voice-coils of the tweeter is where? Behind? It seems to me that the tweeters are functioning, lots of high frequencies (voice, solos etc. ) . What are the exact function of the aluminium tweeter-"shield" ? What is the improvement with them? More of the high frequencies? Thanks again.

I have never seen anything like this....it looks like a cone tweeter with "fake" dome cover. The previous owner may have figured this out and removed it to sound better. You could replace the tweeter with a real dome but you may need to add resistors and make physical alterations to make it fit....its up to your ability and lack of speaker fear to do it.

Trust me. That was a metal dome at one time. The voice-coil is at behind the dome. it surrounds the pole piece you see, oscillating up and down according to input.

Replace the tweets. B&W or Ebay may have 'em. They will sound even better with non-damaged tweets.

I checked out my local dealer for new tweets. It was expensive though. Two new tweets will cost me 160 $ . Thats too much, then I'll rather buy some better speakers second handed, and maybe let these puppies go, or use them without tweeters. Damn, I think I paid too much for the this old stereo. But it sure sounds sweet. Thanks for all of your answers bros!
