Found a Single ADS L810

So yeah, I got lucky and found a single ADS L810 at the flea market yesterday. Picked it up for $15. Haven’t had the chance to test it seeing as I’m just getting started and still don’t have an amp/receiver. Have a couple questions:

Can I run this speaker by itself? I was fortunate to find an l810, but not fortunate to find a pair.

Second, after some searching online, I was unable to find any images of an l810 with black enclosures. Has anyone else seen any like this? If this pair was painted by the previous owner, they did a damn good job because they are high gloss.

As always, thanks for the information everyone.

Nice speaker. Yes using it by itself as mono would work fine.

I imagine it would kind of rare to find another single in the wild for a pair. Your serial number is early.

I am an ADS fan. Three things you might consider. 1. Keep it and play it as mono 2. Wait for another to show up in the wild for $15 (a little more would be fine too :p) 3. Part it out and sell the individual drivers.. Do a little research for this, you might be surprised at the market.

Look here (scroll down to L810) and you should be able to match the serial numbers to the drivers

One other option would be to make a center channel out of it should be fortunate to find another pair of ADS. Many of their bookshelf speakers have some similar voicing and that could work.

Personally, I would strongly consider a part out. It helps someone else bring another pair back to life. It could quite easily get you 10x what you have into them and put you on to an actual pair of something. :dunno:

Thank you for the insight! I guess I’ll just go the mono route for now until I stumble upon another set of speakers as this is all I’ve got currently lol

I know right? At least it’s acceptable to wear this one shoe out for now until I can find a full set.
If I had an application in my home or garage where one speaker would work, this would be a great find. But otherwise, it would only be good for parting out. I think you could spend the rest of your life looking for another "single" one. The other option would be to find a cheap pair of them and use the parts from the two to make one good one. FWIW, I owned a pair of those back in the mid-70's. It is the one piece of gear I regret selling.

Great points. I’m going to rock the one for now for sure. It’s my first HiFi purchase and I’ll never forget the feeling of stumbling upon it. I might just have to keep it for sentimental reasons regardless and, who knows, I might get lucky.

Maybe get a pair of l300s and use the 810 as a VERY large center speaker? Hopefully your tv is wall mounted.

Thank you! I like this route and I’m going to pursue it!
I also have another idea if you choose to do this. If you're up for modding the speaker, then you could wire up the 810 in a biwire configuration, and connect the woofers to a separate amp. Then you could connect that amp to the subwoofer out on a home theatre receiver and use the 810 as a combo subwoofer/center channel speaker.

Edit: I forgot that the woofers also produce the lower midrange of these speakers, so this probably wouldn't actually work.
