Hi, New member.. Question.. CA-610 or CA-610II

That's a purty one!! :thmbsp: But then, I have yet to meet an ugly Yamaha!

Let us know how she sounds! "Inquiring minds" and all that.

What I don't understand the reason for is that the original price of Yamaha CA 0000 series is nearly always more expensive than its successors CA 0010 .. CA 0020 ... slight variation in specs same reputation & only a year or two apart .. so what was it that made the originals more expensive ?

CA-1000, 75wpc, MRSP $600
CA-1010, 90wpc, MRSP $675
CR-820, 50wpc, MRSP $460
CR-840, 60wpc, MRSP $500

Which ones are you talking about? :scratch2:

Welcome DSC!--great find. Frankly, I think you would have done well either way. The CA-610II has a different front layout and a variable loudness control (and coincentric volume/balance--and the main direct switch as noted).

The original CA-x00 series amps had a heavier chassis and cabinet (along with extruded aluminum heat sinks). Only the CA-1010 and 2010 had the extruded heatsinks (steel plates on the smaller models). CA-x10 has 3-sided cabinets, CA-x00 had 4-sided.

I still have my original 1979 CA-810...still going, but my favorite of this series is the CA-1000.

You can't go wrong with any of them--again, welcome to AK.

True with the 600/610 and the 800/810, but don't see others in a quick scan. Pricing coming down the learning curve? Who knows. Probably have to look at the service manuals to note the differences.

Thanks for the welcome wajobu... I am sure that this amp will be more than enough for my basement bar sound system...

I have an old, ,<laugh> :), Sears LXI amplifier as well that works surprising well, The LXI will run a pair of NEC Signature Series speakers (12" subs, 6" mids, and 2" tweeters) these are rated for 80watts.... the Yamaha will run a set of Pioneer CS-1835 speakers (2x8" subs and 1 tweeter per speaker cabinet) these are rated to 150 watts.... both amps will be feed through their own Equalizer (Teac Eq-10 and Sound Shaper 10)...I might switch the amps around, that will come when I dial in the sound system...

I also will have a Pioneer VSX-D498 receiver (bleh black plague :yuck: ) which I will plug in a DVD player, TV, Nintendo system, etc etc that will run a few smaller Pioneer speakers that I will position around the bar..

The room is 20' wide by 25' long so I am sure that this system will be able to rock the joint :music:

Thanks john_w ...she needs a little cleaning (I would like to know what the best stuff is to clean these aluminum faces) but other than that she is fairly clean (considering its almost 30 years old!!)

I should get it early next week and you can be sure I won't be home from the post office 10 minutes before I give her a test drive.. lol...

I have 2 of the 610II amps, The first has a bit of damage to he faceplate and the bulbs are out. I bought it with the matching tuner. Did not care for the sound at all. Got the 2nd more for the idea of using 1 as a parts unit for the other and the 2nd sounds much better. Probably a matter of caps aging. I think they are not as good as Yamaha offeres and moving up to say a 810 combo may yield quite animprovement. The units make for a good bedroom system.

Yeah... I hear ya on that Brian... but I think that this 610 will serve it's purpose for me... my buddy has a CA-410 and it sounds pretty damn good IMO, but I will be the first to admit that I am by far a seasoned audiophile... :)

Amp arrived yesterday and I was like a kid at Christmas... I couldn't wait to get home and unwrap it :)

Cleaned up the knobs and switches... dusted her out inside and cleaned the pots with some electronic cleaner...

Buttoned her back up and hooked it up...

WOW!!! What a sound :jawdrop::D

I am old enough (36) to remember the good gear back in the 80's when at parties to my friends houses, there Mom's and Dad's had this good "silver" gear and I can remember (luckily enough :) ) that it rocked the house..

This Yamaha CA-610 is my first piece of that silver era and I am hooked, hook-line-sinker... and I can only imagine what the better stuff sounds like!! lol...

I plugged in my Pioneer CS-1835's and nervously turned up the power (I know, a better pair of speakers would have been better) ...

1...2...3...ok now she's starting to rock :guitar:...4... oh my ... 5.... holy shiet!!... 6... OK far enough... abort abort abort!!! lol...

I was really pounding those 8" woofers something silly... I figure I would have popped them if I ran it all the way to 10...

Couple of things I now know..

1. 70's solid state kicks ass... give me one of these good ol' amps to any POS black plague junk any day of the week.

2. Although rated at 40 wpc this 610 puts out more than that easily... the power meters were tapping on 55-60 wpc at times...

3. This 610 will always be mine unless something crazy happens and I absolutely have no choice but to part with it..

4. This 610 is going to rock my basement rec-room/bar and will be the center piece of my sound system ... it sounded so clear and clean I don't think I will even EQ it... :)

5. I drool to think what the bigger amps from this era perform like!! lol...

Anyway... needless to say I am a happy AK'er.... :)

Here's a few pics of the 610...

Very very nice Stan! By coincidence I picked up a nice CA-610II today as well, this is my second one. Superb little amps. I also have a CA-2010 which is an absolutely magnificent amp.
Enjoy your amp and good hunting for another :)

Nice. I love Silver. I love Silver Yamahas even more. I just want to say that I think since you were probably using a digital source, the dB levels you were getting at "6" are higher that you'd have gotten from older, expected, analogue sources.

Thanks... lol... I will be on the look out for a another Yammie for sure... my buddy has three vintage amps, an Akai AM-2800, a Pioneer SA-7800, and a Yamaha CA-410....

I will be having an eye out for a CA-2010 :) ... now where's the Saturday newspaper that will tell me where all the Garage Sales are today :D

If you can pull it off that would be a contender for AK's yardsale find of the year :thmbsp:
